I was wondering if it’s legal to host Music Video Clips for older music from the 80s, 70s and 60s era?
If you host it on your own webhosting and make it available in the live preview it is. You cannot include any work that is not your own in the downloadable file. Unless of course you have a written permission to do so.
Thank you for your input!
The work I’m planning to host is for famous music bands and singers (Beatles, The Eagles, Rolling Stones and other variety of music). My aim is to have a complete cultural reference website based on an educational research I’ve done before (American Culture and Music) but basically it is a nostalgic trip to old music with highlights of why such music was developed and what happened at that time. An Internet Documentation with Music Video Clips to enjoy.
Since the music is old (30-50 years old) I thought it is old enough to be considered free for the public to host. I’m not going to gain money from it (no advertisement or even donations).
I didn’t quite get you. You wanna upload something at ThemeForest or make a website of your own? If you are making a website of your own feel free to host whatever you feel like. I mean, the chance of you getting sued for hosting illegal content is quite remote…
I myself had a community where I made tons of music available for download althouhg it didn’t work out hehe
I think he means to host his own site and not themeforest.
While the fact is depending on where your host is there is copyright laws. Even if you do your best to encrypt and make sure no one can download them. Also if you have a buy link from iTunes. It may still be against some of those laws.
I do not want to be the one to suggest to do something which may be illegal. Even if the chances of you getting into legal trouble are slim.
Thank you Eanki and Finsta2!
What made me think that it would be completely legal is the fact the music is pretty old and to my knowledge when something becomes too old it becomes public property? (like Classical music?) but I could be mistaken.
I’m hosting in USA so I’m not sure if I should go on with this plan or not.
