Hi everyone,

I have a qustion for you. I’m now developing my own Layout Builder, but the design is very simillar to Kriesis layout builder (enfold theme). I don’t copy exactly his design, but I have very very simillar layout of options and design style, but the whole code is completely my work. I have very simillar design, because I want to be the most wordpress look what I can do, and kriesis layout builder has very wordpress look took.

So my question is. Is it stealing when I have very simillar design or is it ok?

Thank you very much for all opinions.

Design is actually not just about code but about the concept…so yes that would be considered as a copyright violation.

But what if the design is very simillar to wordpress, which is open source?

Thank you very much for your answer.

His name is spelled “Kriesi”. Using the WP UI to create a WP UX is not the issue. Anyone is welcome do that. This is very different IMO from modeling your design after another’s though. There is much more to his design than simply the how the WP UI looks / works. There’s a saying – “Design is not simply how something looks but how it works.” It goes without saying that yours should have virtually no code in common with his.

You could decide to risk it (not recommended) by taking a chance in guessing how close you make your own item. Being original / unique is always best. Otherwise, you’ll likely find your time wasted if it’s not something that can actually be sold long-terms. You should definitely be concerned with the long-term if you’re selling on here.

And therefore all Devs in the market are copying each other and you should take their themes down

I say don’t worry about it.

If you have somewhat the same layout, well.. if that’s also your idea about how the layout should be than just do it.

Keep the styling your own – different and you’re ready to go.

Like biyanpasau said – how super many themes have the exact same layout and every theme have all the same sliders and so and so on – so no worries about your builder here.

Just make it like YOU think it should work best.

Well that’s obviously not what I was trying to say. Also don’t put it al on me to manage, I will get much too busy that way and already have time management issues ;-)...

Anyway what I tried to say is that there is a thin line between inspired by and copying an idea. My definition of the word concept is kind of what WPWiseOwl describes. Sure there are trends (also some that includes lack of design if you ask me) and there is copying someones idea. If a buyer buys something because he is thinking he is buying something else than I think some sort of line is crossed…but on the other side…the whole copyright discussion whether it is or isn’t has too much room for personal interpretation. I’m the kind of person that likes to play safe.
