...of course the 30% also motivates people who are not so good at advertising, and that’s something we will have to live with.

But there are some (good) blogs/websites that generate TONS of traffic to ThemeForest especially, which of course is part of the reason why the site is so huge today.

It’s a win-win situation, they get a referral commission and we get a sales commission, everyone benefits, and it’s free publicity.

Simple answer then: Yes. If by ripping you mean advertising new items on another site.

You don’t seem to understand the whole purpose of affiliate programs.

This is it: To award people for bringing traffic from external sites, resulting in sales that wouldn’t have been made without that referral.

That is the purpose of an affiliate program. The 30% motivates people who are good at advertising to attract customers to your items.

It’s a kinda clever way for Envato to get other people to do their advertising. No one said all these other sites have to be fantastically interesting and well made, if they advertise and make money then well that’s their purpose I guess.

Those affiliates are harmless in-terms of marketplace/sales/authoring point of view.

But generally it seems internet become a garbage and repeating many things to the point that valid content no longer has guarantee to reach right people. One small example is how jQuery plugin site become crowded with repeated/flooded listings (due to CodeCanyon referrers) and then the official site itself came to halt. Also the Adobe Exchange listing was another example of repetition and flood. The lack of Integrity is what we can observe around any hardcore affiliate system throughout internet.

... In fact, I could create a dozen “high quality” splog sites quicker and with less effort than just 1 app submission.. Maybe I should..

Well, go for it. But some time ago I saw two sites – exact Audiojungle copies in terms of content (with links leading to AJ, of course). I checked those referral names here, and what do you think? These users have earned zero. So making money this way is not so simple as it seems.
