Lets say, i am making a pack of motion graphics pieces like fx, backgrounds, elements and i want to publish it as a project file. Some people don’t own AE and still would like those as a .mov so this is my dilemma. You could say i could publish the pre-renders AND the project file, but this ends up in a 400mb download and that would have the negative effect on people that are just interested in the 1mb project file.

Is it allowed to publish them as 2 seperate projects ? so 1 with all the prerenders and the other one with just the project file with tutorials on how to edit them etc.

I’ve asked myself the same question. Something like Themeforest with Wordpress and html templates.

What do you mean by this, Daniel?

I remember reading in another thread that is possible, Murat. Why don’t you email Mark and give it a try?

Hey Daniel, for example:
Buyer A: Buys a Transition (AE project $9) he might want to change colors, position, etc.
Buyer B: Buys the same Transition (Quicktime Movie only $6) he wants to use it as is and is not interested in editing anything.
Which means: As an author I will have two files that look the same in videohive but different price. Something like in Themeforest with Wordpress and html sites (same result but different code).

You can see some examples here, but I’m not sure if it’s still allowed.

mov – http://videohive.net/item/international-flags-pack-2-15-hd-flags-loops/19633

aep – http://videohive.net/item/realistic-flag-animation-after-effects-cs3-project-add-your-own-graphic/20858

mov – http://videohive.net/item/bokeh-bubbles-on-blue-background/38456

aep – http://videohive.net/item/bokeh-bubbles-on-blue-background/39448

to be honest that flag animation is the first file i purchased on VH and that’s how i found/started to use VH. at that time i was puzzled because I could not understand why one is for 10$ and one for 8$ luckily I went for the more expensive one and that was what i needed. but my point is – this can be tricky for first time users when they end up buying the cheaper product hoping they’ll be able to edit it just like the full project file.

Got it, Daniel… ;)

To your comment Filips, that is exactly what I had in mind. Users may think the cheaper file would also allow editing. I have friends that purchases from here and sometimes they got confused, specially with lower thirds.

If it’s not allowed, it totally should be. It makes perfect sense. It’s not just a question of throwing the project file into the package for an author. Really, a project file requires a user guide. And in my opinion, the more thorough, the better. This can take a day’s work.

The other way round…i.e. adding motion graphics to my project files would almost certainly tip them off the size chart, since they are generally already full up with video user guide.

I always thought that this rule existed just to stop people getting undeserved exposure by publishing first the red version, then the blue version, then the green version etc….

Maybe Mark can come to the rescue and let us know.

On another thought, the Videohive FAQ is almost entirely aimed at authors. It would be great to see this expanded with such questions as what is the difference between a project and a motion graphic answered right up at the top.

I’d also really love to see a site-wide FAQ for common After Effects problems. This would take a great deal of pressure off a great deal of authors. Mine is here, which Videohive is welcome to use as a basis. :)

I guess it should be allowed. I have some Lower thirds ready with masks, ( Motion graphics for avid, premier etc), but I would like to put the same Lower thirds in their original AE version (as a project) so that text can follow their moves. I guess that should be a different item for sale, since it is of no use to Avid, Edius Premier etc.. users. Right?

Exactly i agree, i experienced it first hand on Themeforest where i purchased a html template just then when WP themes got popular, thinking it was for wordpress.. i mean it is just a matter of reading what you buy really .. I was atm too blown away by the design so i purchased it right away finding out later i couldn’t use it since i don’t want to edit a html file everytime to update my site.

I think it is a logical move to approve the method i described, the buyer just has to read if its a .aep or a quicktime file.

I was wondering also, couldn’t we use the pictures they use over at themeforest about what items are included ?

Or just a small Quicktime Logo / .AEP Logo so it is obvious to the buyer what is in the package at first sight. I don’t think it is too hard to implement this since it is being used on the other marketplaces
