Um, all the data is still on the metal plates, the reading/writing mechanism is gone but the data is still in there (in 99%). In theory, you should be able to access the data if you change the mechanism (put the plates in a working hdd). I believe there are services that do that kind of stuff, if you want the data badly.
Apple said pretty much the same and wanted $800.00 I did get the HD back from them tho !! So will have to see what we can do
I don’t understand what kind of policy is that, the HD is yours, you paid for it, you’re not renting it, wtf do they want? They are literally stealing from you. And $800? That’s just ridiculous.
Mine is 2009 macbook so I’m getting a bit worried now. Did you do a lot of moving around with it?
Prognosis, new 1tb hd for $327.00
That’s horribly expensive! You can get one for less than half that price!
I guess most of the cost goes towards installing it in your iMac, but if you’re a bit tech-savvy that’s something you could do for yourself. Have a look at iFixit for future replacements
... and then it stopped
HD on my mac has just committed suicide. The doctor at Apple Mac center, said [ FAILED ] ...
Prognosis, new 1tb hd for $327.00Kicking myself I didnt back anything up that will bloody teach me
Sorry to hear this Australia.
I lost 6 months worth of work and close to 1TB of photography in December. I had a backup drive but it also died on me thanks to a major power spike. I know how it feels, I felt like crying too – all that blood sweat and tears just vanishing in an instant.
I feel your pain.
I bought a 3TB disk for $140 recently. Why is that so expensive?
Unlimited online backup for $4 http://www.crashplan.com/consumer/crashplan-plus.html I got around 2TB backed up with them
As for the HDD, I think a 3rd party data recovery company can replace the controller and salvage data directly from the disk plates.
