Hi, i really don’t understand.. I have worked for three weeks and The reviewer Ivor hasn’t not approved because it isn’t beautiful? I’ve seen other templates and some of these, they were not more pretty than mine.. So why?

Well i know it’s hard especially when you have worked hard for that. We all have been through that. I see some points :
  • Footer font size is too big.
  • There are some spacing issues ( for example Contacts – look the icon and the heading isn’t centered).
  • Too much gray. :)

All i can say is don’t give up. I rejected 4-5 times before i finally get approved.

Hi!

Actually 4riS was being polite. I personally would scrap the whole thing and start from scratch. There are just to many things that don’t work. Typography choice and usage, colors, spacing, etc.

I am also working on my first theme and being a coder primarily there is just so much stuff I have to learn before even trying to get a theme built and submitted.

One thing I have learned right at the beginning is that web design is less about aesthetics and more about usability. UI & UX should define the aesthetics and not the other way around.

Here are some topics I am trying to familiarize myself with, and I think you should to:

  • Font stacks
  • Typography scale & rhythm
  • Usage of colors

Hope that helps!

Ok, but why there isn’t any guide? The most part of themes are really similar between them.. with gray and white background, gray icons and so on..so this is the strict style that they are searching for? I’d like to understand..

About color, i don’t agree.

Thanks for your advices.

Hello, in fact, there is no such a guide. Design is not a thing one can learn following just strictly some certain guide. Design is a sister of art, is there any guide to become Leonardo or Kandinsky (by the way, they both used to produce great design objects as well, not paintings only)? However, many things in design can be learnt through multiple sources, while I still think that talent here is a leading teacher.

As for the colours–black, grey, orange is a very good choice, me myself use it pretty frequently, the question how to apply and use the scheme correctly.

The big problem of your template is that at this step it lacks design knowledge, overall balance and entire harmony. If you wish to continue in design field, do not rush, take your time to learn things, to practice them, to study brilliant examples of web design (if on ThemeForest–go to Dream-Theme portfolio for example, if in general–go to SiteInspire).

Wish you good luck!

These are really good, but i’ve seen also some template in the website that is not really so unique, because it is similar very similar to others..but all these are in sale.. and i can’t understand.. because if creativity is the most important thing, why they are in sale?

What do you think about his? http://amyvalewebdesigner.com/design/TemplateDark.jpg

Ah, don’t pay attention to what is worst, consider what is best. There are many things for sale here (especially last time) which leave much to be desired (designed), they are not a model. There are reasons why those things are exposed for sale but it is not our business. Our task is to be better, stand higher, think smarter and not to be like somebody else.

In example you gave I see a problem with typography, unpolished details and use of accented gradients (strong gradients are not in favour anymore). And also I see it lacking concept, some catching idea, something that makes a heart beating a little bit faster, you understand what I mean.

You’re right.. you have written true things.. but the reason given for general rejections is: “this file does not meet our strict aesthetic guidelines”... ok, the template was bad.. this is not the problem, because there are a lot of people that have submitted their work 8 times without any success..but i can’t understand the answer because what is “strict guidelines”.. the creativity is strict? and if they emphasize creativity, why there some templates similar? with the same icons, colors, backgrounds, footer, twitter images, elements position, brand position..etc..

But this is not important..maybe anymore.. The last thing.. from how many years are you a web designer?

Something like a year before my firing from aviation company where I used to work during 10 years I started to struggle editing myspace profile (myspace was yet in fashion then). Myspace demanded knowledge of html. First tag I learnt was br, it was awfully irritating that I could not make spaces between paragraphs in text on myspace profile. The focus-pokus of html caught me strongly in time and when I was fired (I was happy then) I began to study html and design seriously–I had time for that being released from job daily duty. It was in early 2009… Since those times I keep learning and doing things in design and I still get a lot of pleasure doing that. And even earn some small money:)))
