I am trying to search for something on codecanyon. It also may be relevant to other envato sections. I do not get the search order. The search order does not make any sense. Because in the dropdown says sort by relevance.
Can some give more details about it. Does it search in the title? Does it search in the body? Does it search in the tags?
and how it’s sorted when (default: sort by relevance)?
Thank you

I’m also wondering how is the relevance calculated in search results on codecanyon..
Until now, I think an item with highest relevance means an item which was clicked by the highest number of users – in the search results page – for that search query. Or not?
- Exclusive Author
- Item was Featured
- Author was Featured
- Author had a File in an Envato Bundle
- Has been a member for 4-5 years
- Sold between 100 000 and 250 000 dollars
- Repeatedly Helped protect Envato Marketplaces against copyright violations
- India
Sort by Relevance = Almost Randomize
The sort order in codecanyon is just a bug.
Nothing make sense in the search relevance. What We see it’s not based on sales, rating, Item title, tags or description.
We think it is probably some items are just on each search displayed. Which items are relevant to the search are displayed at the bottom or on the next page. It’s not clear at all.

I don’t think so. There are a lot of factors for searching. Like we can add tags, and good description to our item. But it’s not used probably used in the search. Also count of sales and rating doesn’t count. Just do some test searching and look the results.

Its not a bug.
It just places your files on the end

That’s probably right about the search. They should improved it and make sure that the right items are displayed.
This really effects authors sales. If you items are displayed in the second search page, there is almost no chance for selling it a lot even if it’s great item.

That’s really not fair to these authors which are displayed on the bottom and on the next search page.

I believe a fairly relevant search was not something in Envato’s goals – atleast couldn’t remember any info from staff anytime recently about such improvements. It looks like the current model still gives preference to sales number (to certain extent) even with Relevance filter. That’s fine if there are multiple items with same level of matching words but the following example is not fair:
- An item with huge sales number (age old item) + without matching words on both Title, Tags gets top order – just because of a matching word available in description. (in fact that’s not even author’s intention)
- An item with low sales (new items) + words matching on Title, Tags and / or description goes second to the above mentioned item.
The above particular issue can be fixed just by prioritising Title and Tags than description. Simple and it will not take months or years to fix that. But who cares? The buyer going to buy something from the ocean – Envato loses nothing. Life is easy with the help of ignorance!

Even items with a lot of sales number and good rating will be displayed on the bottom. I have done a lot testing.
