I am a newbie author to Themeforest. Does the purchaser not see updates automatically on their Wordpress dashboard? I know this can be done for premium plugins hosted outside of main repository.

Why would they? If you add code to do it they will. There is a script that does this for themes, but not yet for plugins.

I’m not sure if it was already suggested (it’s hard to read 8 pages of “+1”, “thank you!” posts 
), but I think there should be a delay between the release and sending notices, so authors have some time for updating item page and stuff like this.
