Hi guys,

This was brought up by QuanticaLabs over here, but I wanted to start a new thread as not to distract from the GPL conversion.

I missed the significance of this in the original Notes post, which Japh and Kris pointed out was made clear when it was first posted:

We’ve also improved the upload process — WordPress themes and plugins no longer need to manually include the license and Read-Me files in their upload, as they’re automatically added.
http://notes.envato.com/general/100-gpl-option-now-available-plus-woothemes-arrives/

The problem, as QuanticaLabs pointed out, is that now the download package won’t be installable. I personally find this particularly troublesome for WordPress plugins on CodeCanyon. Now, as soon as I update (which I assume will trigger the inclusion of the license file), my plugins will no longer be immediately installable. I know that this will result in a huge uptick of “plugin cannot be installed” support requests (the equivalent of “missing style.css” for WordPress themes), as I’ve seen it before .

Can we please make this option of automatically including the license folder optional? I’m perfectly happy to manually include the license file. This automatic inclusion is going to create a huge amount of unnecessary trouble for both authors and customers.

Thanks to QuanticaLabs for bringing this to my attention – I’m hoping I can avoid having a lot of unhappy customers. Losing this control over our download package makes it difficult to properly tailor our products for our customers’ needs.

Thanks for considering making this optional!

Chris

Honestly I dont think Envato cares, look how many request theme authors get with “stylesheet missing” threads, comments and emails to the authors they number in the hundreds a week, yet all it would take is adding a simple notice above the download area/confirmation email/user profile or a notice after purchase

@Chris – You certainly have a point; a solution for that issue is long overdue.

I’m hoping that since the solution here is to remove something rather than add something new, and that this is an issue introduced by a “feature” that causes new problems for authors and customers, that this might be considered and accomplished more immediately. (Especially on CodeCanyon, where a higher percentage of packages are directly installable).

I have a new release just about ready, but this is making me have second thoughts. It occurs to me that all my customers who are upgrading will also try to install the plugin as they originally did (if it worked before, why not now?) and run into this problem – so I won’t just be fielding this question from new customers, but potentially from many, many previous customers.

I’d love to be able to avoid that headache :)

We do care, and that is in the process of being added Chris. It’s something I suggested about 2 weeks ago… but while doing that, we would also like to link to the KB to cover some of the other major issues buyers encounter, and that also requires tracking down said issues and slimming it down the solutions enough for a buyer not to simply ignore it and flip back to the forum because it’s too much to read.

As for the other issue sevenspark mentioned (and QuanticaLabs before), I will bring it up asap.

Thanks!

I’m totally agree with you @sevenspark and I would like to have an option to manually include the license file as it was before.

I don’t think these announcements are clear enough – I seem to miss them all. I only find out about new features on the marketplace when there’s a thread like this that pops up.

I missed the notice about the new checkbox that you can tick to receive an email when an item is updated – I only saw this when somebody else brought it up. And now apparently I’ve missed this new information about not needing to include a license file with the upload. I still would have included one if I didn’t see this thread today.

Where are these announcements and why am I not seeing them?

This has been an issue for years, and has been brought up by many of the community members way before 2 weeks ago, Actually I mention it in an email with Collis almost 2 months ago and I can prob track down threads with it from years past. So with the track record at hand Im sticking with Evnato doesnt really care, if they did it wouldnt still be an issue after all these years of people publicly mention easy fixes on the forums.

The dashboard announcement section is busy with “Most wanted – Reward” things. The upload related changes can be better displayed (as 2-3 line announcement) in the item upload page. In the same way, download related changes can be displayed in the downloads page – simple, no one going to get hurt with official info about changes.

Thanks, Calin! Much appreciated!

I still would have included one if I didn’t see this thread today.

That’s part of why I posted this here; I figured if I’d missed it, many other have as well, and will be wondering why their customers can’t install their products upon next upgrade. Even if this doesn’t get resolved, authors should be aware so they can properly address their customers’ concerns.
