We recently went through all our 40+ themes to fix Twitter widgets and shortcodes due to Twitter API changes. Spent hours going through all our new and also very old themes that nobody’s buying now. We also have to go through and test all our themes after every new WordPress version is released. You can imagine now long it takes if you need to go through 40 themes and maybe fix few issues here and there, release updates and so on.

Wouldn’t it be a good idea for Envato to introduce recurring yearly fees for all purchased items? I’m talking about let’s say 5-10% of item price. It would keep the old items going, and authors happy.

Hope I haven’t opened a war thread between authors and buyers now, just want to hear your opinion on that ;)

Nop, supply and demand, there are more authors then needed, if you don’t like it you can just leave the market.

Also, it would be a stupid descision to have Envato interfear with a sort of maintenance contract.

Be smart – offer your own services directly to the buyer if they ask for it.

Yea, that’s one option, but removing them from the marketplace will make:

  • Existing customer unhappy
  • Author unhappy as there will be many complaints
  • Envato unhappy as customer and author are unhappy
Introducing small fees will allow:
  • Customer to use their existing website longer
  • Author to cover maintenance and support costs
  • Envato profit from recurring payments

This can be viewed from 2 angles. One with the mentality of committing for future updates with update fee. Another is keeping the amount of uploads within manageable numbers! :D The former one is more risky than later one.

Look from one more angle – an author/vendor with high number of themes supposed to have sufficient team / resource for updates.

Yeah you can’t do direct promotion for products or services via / on Envato marketplaces.

But you can offer your services if a buyer asks for it. You can offer your services on your own website. It doesn’t matter if it’s a buyer of your items. Envato has absolutely nothing to do with you offering your services to whomever, even if it’s a buyer from one or more of your items. Only thing is you may not promote your own services directly on Envato marketplaces.

So… Anyway i know if it’s going to involve custom work i don’t want and need another party to get between it. Makes no sense.

My 5 cents. Start to provide a paid support. Lifetime support for free isn’t right way. As the compromise, only first month can be free. However, in any case, updates must be for free.

I think one of the main reasons that many users like to buy from Envato is that they pay once and there is no monthly fees, they do not need to buy updates,...
