I am getting close to launching my theme on Theme Forest and was wondering the best way to market and get my theme sold. It seems like the market place does a good job of it , but was interested to hear other ways.

Email Marketing! you know, you can build long term relationship with your buyers.
Use aweber, getresponse, mailchimp or others.

How much are those alternative marketing methods important? Or to rephrase the question, what % of consumers come from browsing trough ThemeForest marketplace and Envato activities only?
Build up an email newsletter. Give free stuff out.
This might be a little off-topic but it might help you in some way:
Be careful when you advertise on multiple channels. The current Envato Marketplace affiliate program does not support any secondary arguments for your incoming sales. This means that if you advertise on multiple channels, you will never know which sales actually came from each channel.
You might burn up 1000’s of dollars on advertising and spending more than half on websites that don’t convert. In fact you will in most cases not even know if any of your channels convert at all, because if the buyer already owns an account at ThemeForest, you will not see whether the sale came from your campaign or from ThemeForest itself.
In my opinion this is a major flaw in the Envato Marketplaces.
