I purchased my new MBP in early March and up until recently I’ve had very few freezes as I’ve kept my software/storage to a bare minimum.

It has been a bit hot around here lately and I was curious if maybe these issues were related to overheating.

I had a few freezes where the keyboard/mouse were totally useless, and for some reason tried unplugging the (fully charged) laptop – down it went, odd.

The latest freeze about knocked me out of the chair, the speakers began to pulse a terrible banging tin-can and static noise about 4 times per second. Again, unplugging it turned off the laptop with a full charge…

I let it sit for a couple hours and am typing on it now, fully charged, not plugged in.

Just looking for some thoughts. Thanks!

My first thought is bad cooling. There was an article a while back on some bad ensembled MBPs, where there was too much cooling paste between the cpu and the heatsink. This way heat is not transferred good enough. As far as I understand the MBP goes into powersaving mode when you unplug it, meaning a lower load on the cpu and thus less heat.

That would explain it, but I think you’d be much better off just returning it and getting a new one ;) You paid for working hardware right?

I’ll do some more digging on this & see what I can find. I also just installed iStat to take a peek at temps and such during the day… Thanks!

As far as I know, MBP heats up a lot of times. It does go into powersaving mode whenever you unplug it, but it depends if that is what you set on your battery options. The cracking sounds you are hearing might be a cause of some programs that shouldn’t be running. You could try to check it out.

Just an update – I experienced something new last night, an interesting kaleidoscope-looking effect on the screen after a freeze.

After a restart and about 30 minutes, it froze but with a low beep, beep, beep every few seconds, screen on, frozen stiff.

It froze first thing this morning (so probably not heat related) so I uninstalled what little I had and so far so good but I’m only a couple hours into my work day.

I filed a ticket with Apple, I’ll see what happens.

Never a dull moment. :)

The processor can only take so much, after a while it will get damaged, causing permanent freezes. I really hope you get a new one!

Did you upgrade to Lion? There have been numerous reports of the core temp being much higher and the fans being on a much higher RPM . @wizylabs has been having issues so you can talk to him about it.

I also have the 2011 MacBook Pro and mine used to freeze and crash A LOT before an update came out that addressed the issue (had something to do with it not being able to switch from integrated to dedicated GPU )... unfortunately it still crashes but very rarely. Like once a month… which I can deal with.

According to Twitter, I think I’m one of the 15 who didn’t upgrade yesterday, figured I shouldn’t throw that into the mix.

In that case, your computer is probably defective. There’s no reason it should be doing that. Do you have all the system updates?

Yea, latest OS & hardware updates.

Just a quick update, I spent time on phone support with Apple today, going on about an hour of uptime since… if I find a definitive answer/solution, I’ll be sure to post.
