Hey guys! I thought I should go to the experts for some mic recommendations :)

What do you suggest for a vocal mic for a small garage band that is just having fun. Nothing serious but something that works well. If it can be set to make the singer actually hit the notes, that would be even better! :)

Hi KingDog,

it depends a bit on the purpose. For just playing (also playing live!) and having fun this mic here is really good (and designed) for vocals:

Shure SM 58

But if you are looking for a recording mic for vocals you will need a large diaphragm condenser mic, this here does a really good job and works well with smaller budgets:

SE Electronics 2000

Hope this helps a bit ;-)

P.S.: None of the mics recommended above can make the singer hit the right notes :-D

If you are recording the vocals you can do it afterwards with ‘Antares Autotune’ or ‘Celemony Melodyne’, but please avoid thoses annoying ‘Cher EFX ’ that you can listen to in almost every billboard hit now ;-)

Definitely SM58 for your purpose. No doubt about it. It’s a sturdy mic that has been used for generations by many bands all over the world.
You can drop it, throw it on the floor, spill beer on it, I will still work like a charm! :-)

If you’re looking for something a little more studio quality (you’ll need a pop filter) I would definitely recommend the Sterling Audio ST51 . For under $100, really hard to beat the sound.

But yeah the Shure SM stuff is essentially bombproof. You can put it in the microwave and then run over it with a car after throwing it in a pool and go right on recording haha.

For live performance definitely SM58 (as a 12-years experienced live FOH sound Engineer i can only recommend – and after all it´s classic :) )

... and for studio work i have a very good experience with RODE NT2A – universal large diagram condenser for a good price. And in a official bundle – with a pop filter, XLR cable a and a nice sticker :D

Keep on rocking an make some great music!!

You are probably already rocking out with your SM58, but I would also suggest the Sennheiser E835 as an alternative. They are the same price new, and have a more pleasing EQ curve that a 58. They are also just a little more sensitive.

I just wanted to say that! :) You was the first! Owners of both Sure and Sennheiser, please give your comments about that. I want to buy new one for my band.
