I submitted my wordpress photo gallery theme and it got rejected because “the design looks incomplete…. We required something better from a minimal theme. Especially the detailed parts such as padding/spacing, the use of white space, font size, style, color, types, lines etc.” You can see it at http://www.joshuawdesign.com/wptheme1/

Does anyone here have any suggestions to improve it and get it approved? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I know you are going to for a minimal look, but right now, it looks unfinished. Try adding some color. Also, everything is super squished. Add a bunch of margins and padding to some of your divs. Also, might I suggest a contact form. You current contact page is nothing.

Thanks Chris! I added alot more color. I gave it a dark background instead of white. I am going to include both the light and the dark in the theme, but I think dark looks better with the color additions. The red color is also customizable in the theme options. I also added more margins and padding like you said, and am adding a contact form. Does anyone else have anymore suggestions?

I like the darker background, but the red is to light, you can bearly see it. Also, add more padding, like 20px! on the blog page, what is with all the white lines. those lines just don’t work, I would redo that entire page.

I’d change the brown to a lighter version or a different light color altogether, not enough contrast with the dark background IMHO , my 2 cents!

It got rejected again for the third time: “1. You did fixed the contact page but the overall design still required some improvements. Especially the front page. 2. This theme is too simple and doesn’t offer much options and doesn’t look like a premium theme in terms of design and aesthetic quality.”

I am working on adding a lot more options, but I am not sure how to improve the “design and aesthetic quality.” Any more suggestions? I feel like it is really close and I don’t want to give up now.

It got rejected again (4th time). Reason:
“Your template has a good start but, as we have high standards, you will need to make some additional improvements in overall aesthetics and aspects such as graphics, layout, colors, etc.”
I am really running out of ideas to improve it. I’m sorry to keep asking for help, but I am determined to get this theme accepted. Any more suggestions, please?

It is still to basic. I know you want it to be minimal, but right now it is just basic. My first theme took something like 9 rejections before it was finally accepted.

There are tons of area it can be improved. To start, the navigation has nothing going on. Try adding some more flare to it. The theme is nothing but solid colors and and lines. Try adding some gradients to it, or maybe a faint background pattern. I think you can do more with the content on the right, right now it is just plain. The contact page has to much white-space on the bottom right had corner. Fill it with something. Also, the stock images you are using sure aren’t helping. Browse over to iStockPhoto.com and get some new stock images. Also, the green on the grey is not working. In the blog, why no comments? If it is suppose to be more of a portfolio, call it that. Not trying to plug my own work, but look at my latest theme: http://simply-business.atlchris.com/blog/ notice how there is stuff going on, but it is still fairly clean and simple.

On the gallery pages, there is no information about the images, just a small name on mouse over. I would toss the name on mouse over, and just add a little area of details, like when the image was taken, location, name, ...

I hope that is enough to get you pointed in the right direction. Don’t give up on it. Like I said, something like 9 rejections for my first theme. I am glad it go rejected so many times, because I learned a ton while trying to improve it.

I personally like the theme and I don’t think a theme should be graphics heavy in order to be considered “premium”. But that’s just me.

In any case, don’t beat yourself up too much about their feedback! I got the same canned response myself: http://themeforest.net/forums/thread/would-you-reject-this-am-i-crazy/22566

Maybe listening to what the community has to say might help you (and me both) understand what’s that “high quality standard” they keep mentioning.
