Hello all, just finished my probably last WP theme. Unfortunately this one got rejected with a “did not meet criteria” message and not much feedback.

I’d appreciate your feedback on this. The theme is very customizable and has a few layouts that change the site’s appearance.

I need a fresh pair of eyes on this as I cannot see any problems with it lol!

Hi,

IMHO it looks bit outdated, I don’t like menu and buttons, maybe you should go with different approach on those two, make them sharp, with more contrast to rest of the page..

Also, your “Curvo” theme is awesome. ;)

Do you mean the layout/design of the site is outdated? or were you referring to the buttons?

If you’re referring to the layout/design, all of them? I have different layout options

I’ve mostly meant buttons and menu. Speaking of layouts, Margined is the best one, and I think you should stick with only that one and improve it.

I have to agree with BatVfx with regard to the buttons appearing outdated. I think for most part there is a sharp look to the layout and the round buttons stand out in weird way.

Personally I don’t care too much for the white outline on the “ArmyKnife” font.

I like margined and sectioned. I do not care too much for faint gradient because I find the background a bit distracting.

Anyway, thats just what I think. (caveat – I am new to themeforest and not as versed as other authors.)

@BatVfx

Thanks for this, Let me start working on that one!

Not sure about sticking with one layout only though, I have around 11 layouts available (slightly different margined ones, slightly different sectioned ones, etc. depending on your taste). And that feature partially named the theme :)

@Fjguzzone

I see, I didn’t think of it that way. Let me try out different button designs.

Maybe I can make the background darker also.

Thanks for both of your suggestions! I will get to work on them asap!

Firstly I have to say the theme you’re working on is looking good. There are a few issues that ive noticed however as you know im no expert!

I have to agree with the above comments. The navigation needs a little work, the buttons are too rounded and thus making it looks dated. Try and reduce the round corners to maybe 2-3px. Maybe use a little noise to give it some texture.

I do also think you should tone down the number of variations you can have. If you concentrate on one version, get it to the point its accepted by theme forest, then add the additional variations as an update. Doing it this way should save you loads of time, you won’t have to keep updating 101 css, html and psds before you resubmit.

I would also look at the alignment of your features In the footer ive noticed that you have different padding set for spacing of elements, try and keep them uniform. Say either 26 or 36px.

Finally the ting that started to get to be after looking at your website for 5 or so minutes is the resizing slider. I don’t mind a little but of movement but I personally think its too much From a personal point of view I would refrain from using cufon, there is nothing wrong with it par se but it slows your website down and makes it near on impossible to select the text and makes your website look garbage without JS turned on. There are also numerous EULA issues which prevent you from being able to legally embed fonts in javascript files.

One thing I have noticed from both of my recent submitting and rejections is that if you don’t wow them with your first page then they do not visit any other pages on your website, might be something to bear in mind when submitting the demo!?

I hope the above comments help you with your design, do rememebr they are just my thoughts and I look forward to seeing your improved versions.

Thanks Sukka for the great comments! I will see what I can do with all of those!

For the Cufon fonts, yea you’d have to have JS turned on but the good thing is that it’s almost always on nowadays (except maybe for the older browsers: ie7 and below, which I don’t support). The way I deal with EULAs is that I just include lots of fonts with the theme which are Cufon friendly. The reason I love Cufon is because some browsers don’t display them anti-aliased and sometimes they appear thicker too (I hope there’s a fix for this, or that I’m wrong about this). :)

Guys, I did your suggestions and still got rejected. I’m thinking of more drastic changes. I got this message:

Right now the template feels like a freebie and doesn’t offer the level of aesthetics necessary

I do not quite agree with this feature-wise, but probably there may be a hint of freebie-ness design-wise.

Suggestions please!
