I have started on a new company site template. You can see the homepage here . I’m hoping Jeffery’s still around and can give some advice.

(Personally I think the search box is too big, but I want to hear other people’s opinions)

Thanks for any advice!

Right off the bat..

1) Nothing seems to line up. All of your elements should line up with something.

2) The yellow is bit harsh…

3) I understand your idea with the contact box, but I don’t think it works. Instead, it throws the layout off. Plus, the “Send” button looks like a mistake.

4) The search box is too large. You can sometimes get away with that. Mixturtle.com comes to mind (via @DrewDouglass). But in this case, I don’t think it works.

5) The site, as a whole, feels a bit flat. Try to add some depth.

More than anything else, I would focus on your lines. :)

What do the rest of you think?

Yellow is totally harsh and in my opinion too many and to big gradients. I would say : This item doesn’t meet our criteria

I think Jeffrey pretty much summed it up. It seems that your going for a strong web 2.0 feel but have missed the mark. To do a web 2.0 site as a beginner is really difficult and I’ve seen a lot of people not get them right, usually starting with the color palette. Try a more subtle effect and use pre-existing color palettes.

Ok thanks for the comments, do you think blue on white instead of yellow on dark gray would be more subtle?

For me , the ‘portfolio’ section is really distracting from the navigation and header above it.

I think the navigation might be better off below that section, but thats just me.

Yellow and grey can work, you just gotta get the palette right, here’s a project I’m working on right now:

So don’t give up on your palette choices, just make sure they don’t hurt the eyes. :)

@jscheetz – Your right, you can use yellows and many others colors but for most beginners it seems that colors is the hardest part for them to get right. Your one of the best when it comes to choosing the best color palette we have here but many have difficulties.
