I’m not sure if anyone else has noticed a trend that’s been going on in digital and online consumer goods. Basically these types of businesses have been starting to use the subscription model.
My wife currently has a subscription to a cosmetics place and receives a box of items each month at her chosen price point. She doesn’t know the contents until she opens it and always feels like she’s gotten a good deal even if some of the items she’ll never use. Other examples include barkbox and digital comics.
I’ve been giving this model some though and decided I’d post it here on the forums as its a good model for what the authors on the Envato sites are doing as well. If each month I could pay $20 (or more) and get a bundle of digital goods in categories that interest me I’d more than likely enjoy that.
Currently [removed by mod] is offering a portal to allow digital authors of content to do just this model. You can check it out at [removed by mod]
Some people may say that I’m crazy for sharing the idea but I value the creators on the sites and wanted to really open a discussion and here what everyone would think.
More bundles? Damn, no thanks.
Thanks for sharing, but another bundle is not the best idea.
The issue with this is that for something like makeup (Birchbox e.g.), it will generally be used/tried/appreciated by the recipient as it’s something they use most, if not every day. Besides, there aren’t many girls I know who wouldn’t be thrilled at the idea of stockpiling cosmetics, regardless of whether or not they’d use them as soon as they were received.
With envato items, they are mostly purchased for specific projects that have defined needs. I might want some glossy buttons for one project and an accordion slider for another but until that project came along, I’d just be stockpiling these items until the list got unmanageable.
Wasn’t trying to put in a competing site just share an idea.
The key difference between the current bundle and a subscription is the opt-out nature of a subscription. It would seem that more money could be made by authors.
The thing I was thinking is that the subscription would be controlled by me from categories or authors that I follow. I’d still not have control over what I received and it would be up the authors to determine if they wanted to allow files to be part of it and at their price point (or percentage discount).
There’s some enjoyment in the idea of receiving a gift of sorts in my e-mail.
I’m also not for the current bundles as they really seem to devalue the authors work. I’m not suggesting lowering the rate to those levels.
I was just wondering if others were seeing the trend and if it had value for digital assets.
This trend is very popular this year, but in the outside of Envato Marketplace…
It does happen outside where there is no exclusivity for your products. So, you are free to create your own bundle or submit your products to any popular deal provider. The purpose is simple, to get more sales, to get more money. And don’t forget the fact that different products have different degree of support. No support needed for graphics products, but WordPress Themes, for example, needs to be backup with good support…
In Envato Marketplace, especially ThemeForest, where you need to be exclusive author to get more money, where you cannot setup your own price, where you cannot create your own bundle products, where everythings are controlled by Envato, bundle trend is not really good idea…
I’m hesitant to suggest this type of product to my blogger friends out there because it’s just cheaper way to find more reasons to not write (articles or code, depending on your cup of tea).
