Re: the other thread. I suspect if you used a bayesian average, that there’ll be an author outcry. I quote Wikipedia: ”... the quality of the Bayesian average … is dependent on the judgment of the person doing the calculation.” A mean average is very transparent, a median average is pretty transparent, a bayesian average is a special kind of statistical voodoo. Authors ain’t gonna like that. :-)

Great point. The way we’ve talked about it is “more transparency, no voodoo”. It should not be difficult to explain how we arrive at the overall rating. If it becomes difficult, I think we’ve failed.

“Sort by Rating” is not working with custom search!

Can you please provide a link to a search URL that isn’t working, so that I make sure we have a good test case if there’s a bug.

I can give an example… I do not know if NenadVFX is talking about similar thing but here is my example (I opened a ticket about that but there seems to be nothing happening):

1. Go to eCommerce -> Virtuemart

2. Sort by Rating

3. DiabloFX must be first and it’s not. Actually the sorting results are different almost every time.

In the Virtuemart Category there are only Joomla Templates. If you go to CMS -> Joomla and sort by rating you will see that DiabloFX is first. So logically, it should be first in the Virtuemart Category as well :)

EDIT: This issue was present with the old rating as well.

@Justin: no news about the rating’s block position? As I’ve seen in the first pages I’m not the only one complaining about that.

(And it’s surely a quick change to do)

I see we have a revised rating system – breaking the star rating down to show the makeup. It would be nice to also include in the ratings a comment system such as on Amazon. I’d appreciate knowing why the particular ratings were given. This would offer a clearer understanding and perhaps avoid misconceptions as to why said stars were awarded. It would also serve as a guide for potential purchase. Thanks, Fred

If you type something in videohive search (for example: Logo intro) and then sort it by rating, items are not sorted by rating very well… Yes, 5 stars items will be presented first, but for example: first file have 4.83, second 5.00, third 4.78, forth 4.9…

As you see even on the best files of Graphicriver there were “bad eggs” trying to ruin the good name of the item in question by rating 1or2 stars

Were they deliberately trying to ruin the reputation of the item, or were they genuinely disappointed in their purchase? Are the reasons they were disappointed reasonable and relevant, or unreasonable and irrelevant?

We’re about to start collecting data and research to help answer these questions with a bit less gut feel and a bit more science :)

...with this new feature this will just increase their motivation to keep doing it so as its way more effective now, a feature to prevent this should had been study before implementing the new rating system. My two cents :)

Removing or reducing the impact of irrelevant ratings is a much bigger project, but it’s important to us. We felt (and many on the community agree, some don’t) that this breakdown was worth shipping sooner, rather than holding off any longer (it’s a really long-running request).

I think it would be a good idea to have a rating subsystem with categories

- functionality
- documentation
- ease of installation
- customizability
- graphics quality
- code structure
- support quality
These are the only things that matter to me.. It would be cool if public could see this breakdown of each rating.

These are the kind of choices we’re going to give the buyer when we’re asking them for the primary reason for the rating (a feature that should ship this week). Seeing this data will help us figure out if we need a subsystem like you’ve proposed, or if we need to encourage a certain kind of rating, etc.

Anyway, even when seeing my files dropping from 5* to four and a half, i think is a much needed feature. Thanks devs for the work.

Thanks for seeing the slightly bigger picture :)

i also consider is way too big. Something more subtle will also work and will distract less.

Thanks for the feedback, have made a note, you’re not alone.

Detailed ratings is good, envato moving forward, thanks! But explain me somebody how it works on Audiojungle or Photodune? Before purchase there buyers can see/listen full front-end product, and choose is it suitable for him needs. I don’t understand why buyers after purchasing some my music give me low rating. I do not see criterias to rate files after purchase there in a whole. For such products as music I think better to integrate “like/appreciate” system instead may be.

I personally agree with you, but we haven’t made a decision either way on this yet.

Over time, a different approach might be needed for items that are much more “what you see/hear is what you get”. The first step for us (sorry for sounding like a broken record!) is to collect som e internal data — what was the primary reason for the buyer’s rating?
