@Justin: no news about the rating’s block position? As I’ve seen in the first pages I’m not the only one complaining about that.

Step 0: Wake up early to 100+ forum notification emails.
Step 1: Drink coffee.
Step 2: Read every reply in this thread, take notes
Step 3: Absorb feedback, decide on some changes we’re confident in
Step 4: Ask devs nicely to do ‘em ASAP, without completely disrupting work in progress

I’m very near the end of Step 2, although I’ve circled back to Step 1 a few times :)

Anyway I think that good solution for that is to provide buyers some additional simple explanation in the purchase confirmation mail. For example Print screen of download page with marked spots where to click! :).

We’ve started sending a follow-up reminder email one week after purchase for unrated items :)

So personally I don’t think it’s a good idea to encourage ratings. Because all it’s going to do is attract 3 star ratings, which will bring down the majority of ratings, and be bad for business across the board.

We’re tracking where each rating came from (email reminder or on-site), so we’ll be able to see if there’s a difference in ratings through this channel over time and adjust our approach :)

Getting more ratings would be nice, but probably CodingJack has right… I remember when one “unsatisfied” buyer contacted me because he was not able to open After Effects project in Camtasia Studio???!!! :)

Good idea.

On the surface more ratings sounds like a good idea. But if there’s one thing this new system reveals, it’s that we’re operating with a built-in handicap (noobs who rate 1 star). Thankfully the 4-5 star ratings heal these 1 star stingers over time. But introduce 3 star ratings to the mix and the handicap becomes harder to overcome.

But this argument assumes that email reminders will produce 3 star ratings (which is just a theory). If they produce 4+ ratings I’m all for it :)

I still think that this new rating feature is good. Despite of some unsatisfied responses from authors, I think Envato Dev team has successfully made one good step to make the rating feature more rational / transparent.. Maybe people just have to patient.

People tend to be more patient if their money isn’t on the line ;)

This feature does not work for audio sold on the Envato network, simple as that.
I personally agree with you, although we haven’t made a formal decision on this yet. A similar problem exists on PhotoDune and other items…this can’t all happen instantly, but we’re definitely not ignoring you.

Thanks for responding to this Justin, I appreciate you taking the time to do that. It’s good to hear that you agree about the ratings system not working for audio and that you’re sourcing some pros in for the search engine development, I think everyone (at AJ at least) is keen to see your handiwork.

Interesting how 5 stars and 1 star is the most popular rating… I think this system is a bit silly, I mean it’s pretty obvious some buyers are voting 1 star out of spite if the majority of ratings are high.

Actually, the overwhelming majority are 5 star ratings (69%), very few 1s (4%). Here’s the breakdown across all items in a pretty graph:

Seeing more 1s (4%) than 2s (3%) is a hint that there’s a problem still, so I’m not trying to sound dismissive, but overall, 1s aren’t “popular”.

Could be that 1 actually is more popular as a disgruntled “this wasn’t what I expected”, or “it’s harder to customize than I thought it would be” or “my computer can’t read that file format”.

Since 1 is the lowest it goes, you might find that 1 is also the category that’s picking up stuff for all the people who would have voted 0, -1 or -1000 too!
