I have few one star ratings for some of my items without any comment or support mail.

Also I recently got one star rating for my new theme and in review section there was a comment that buyer can’t import preview xml file in theme. Thanks to new system I could see name of buyer and had luck to find him actually his website and to contact him. My first question was why didn’t he first contact me about his problem because I clearly said on my profile that I answer support questions. He said that he already contacted some other authors and didn’t get response so he gave one star rating just like that, because of previous bad experience. In the meantime he fixed problem with my theme, said that he’s sorry and changed rating in 4 stars.

That’s one story about reasons why we’re getting one star ratings.

Here is my recent story.

The customer purchased Facebook Template (HTML version) and rated 2 stars. Here is the comment: ” It has no interface to enter pictures, descriptions or new records of any kind. It’s so time consuming to do that I rather pay a higher price for a more user friendly site. Never go to publish it, not worth the money paid unless it gets an interface. The nice looks are deceiving considering the work involved to get it ready.”

It’s ridiculous. How should we protect ourselves in such cases.

You are not the only one. Got one from a web design agency (at least this is how they advertise themselves on their Envato profile) that one my WordPress plugin doesn’t work on their theme. The solution was on this page. We explained the error and showed the page to them, they “yelled” at us how they were doing this for a long and they don’t need lessons in WordPress development. So I ignored them, but if they read this just “add wp_footer() in footer.php and stop being stupid”.

I really wish the reviews were public and we can reply to them … I think we can have a good laugh.

P.S. Most of them ask for a refund. I hope Envato are not refunding their money.

from what I’m reading here (and on other threads) the buyer think the review are public. envato should go with this live else user may think they are betrayed as they invest time to review and write but no one can see it, except the author.

a reply button should be available.

review go live. other buyers can see and judge. also reply button

I’ve thought about this “response” issue quite a bit since the reviews were added. At first, I wanted the ability to respond to a negative review because I truly felt like I could help people who weren’t reaching out for help. But after thinking about it some more, I think it opens up a huge can of worms in terms of generating unnecessary conflict between authors and buyers. And since buyers are essentially the “holy grail” here, it’s probably best to give them the last word, regardless of the validity of the review.

^ I disagree actually :/

Today we had a 1-star review (that reduced the overall rating to 4 stars) for our theme just because it uses widgets to setup the homepage. The point is that this is the main feature of our theme, and we clearly state it at the description.

I am sure the user got confused somewhere, and just did not know how to ask for support. In this case, I really need to reply him and point him to our support desk.

Thanks a lot for sharing your ideas Justin! Sounds GRT!

Out of my 300+ sales, I just have 17 ratings most of which are 4 or 5. I have been wondering what to do to actually make a buyer rate a bought item which has a definite impact on sales. Hopefully this effort will help. Go on Strong!

Cheers..
