Just want to chime in as an AudioJungle author. The ratings make no sense for us. The buyer can always hear exactly what he’s going to buy. Sometimes we still get a low rating. Why would anyone buy something they don’t like and then rate it low? I don’t see the benefit of a rating system for AudioJungle since you can always check the product in full before buying.

Just a few words from me.

I support this. It doesn’t make sense to purchase an audio file which you can hear, and then rate it two stars, it’s just not right.

This is also somewhat valid for videohive. Stock footage and motion backgrounds are pretty much what you see is what you get, yet you’ll see some low ratings on these items. A case could be made that perhaps technical qualities weren’t up to par, but then it wouldn’t have been approved by the reviewer in the first place. I also don’t think the rating system is useless for these cases: a 4 or 5 star rate can serve as a nice extra “thank you, great file” besides the sale, which can serve to attract other buyers. Anyway, rule of thumb, if someone gives a 1-star rating on something, maybe they should have to state the reason in a written public comment.

Good point. Justin also said:

What are we rating, exactly? We don’t explicitly state anywhere what a buyer should be thinking about when they’re rating an item. Is it the technical quality? Aesthetics? The author’s support? Flexibility & configuration options? The author’s willingness to help with questions or customisation? The purchasing experience? The installation process? Value for money?

So maybe there’s just another problem, not the file quality. Angry buyers might even give you 1 star if they cannot unzip the main package, who knows? This is a big issue in the current rating system: There are thousands thing that can affect how buyers rate the item, BUT the only thing the buyers dictate from the rating stars, is the quality of the item itself. It’s confused and make ratings something really hard for authors.

As far as encouraging ratings..

I think there are 3 types of raters: 5 star raters (so thrilled with the product they want to thank you). 1 star raters (people who are pissed off). And regular buyers.

This leaves buyers who are neither thrilled nor angry with their purchase, meaning they’d probably average 3 stars collectively. And that’s not exactly a positive thing.

But this is just a theory, and I’d be interested to know if there’s an author who consistently encourages ratings with a positive result.

Yep, that’s been requested a lot. The data we’re collecting will help us understand the primary reason for that rating — it may be that the 1-star ratings are misunderstandings, rather than truly relevant.
