Hello,

I have just been asked by someone if it is possible to receive updates/alerts on projects by individuals that you follow, by email.

It seems at the moment, the whole follow/following part of the Envato network is not as functional as it could be and I have to admit, I do like the idea of enabling alerts from ‘select’ authors when they have a new live project. It could even be done by keyword, so an individual that likes coroporate templates could set up a keyword alert for ‘Corporate, Business and Marketing’ for example, something which Vimeo currently does very well.

Is this something that would interest others? I’m guessing this is more geared towards buyers rather than authors but I think it would definitely help to bring people back to the site again to make purchases from authors from which they have had a positive experience. The option to receive email alerts only from certain authors (and only if you want the alerts) would stop this from being a simple junk email weekly round-up thing.

Thoughts?

Although, when I think about it, it might be a bad idea, because I’m sure a lot of clients wouldn’t like to receive emails…

Then the client could ‘switch off’ alerts. The idea I suppose would be to allow those individuals who do want to be kept updated the means to receive an update via email.

Without the option to disable or customise the alerts then yes, bad idea, but with a cleverly designed interface and customisation options… good idea?

Yeah now i think about it, it’s a shame we don’t have something like this on videohive atm. You could run a sideblog with your videohive items like most of us do, people can subscribe to your blog/products and receive updates via newsletters etc or twitter.

But something automatic through Envato would be perfect.

I didn’t. Like the idea the reason is normally buyers not only follows 1 author but many authors so it will annoy the buyer with lots of emails and most of the buyers buy the item when they need it and if they like any particular author they can come back and see if there favourite author has got a new project and if you are talking about a buyer interested with one author the he can follow him

Yes, but imagine if you are a buyer and you like the style and templates that one particular author creates. As opposed to having to login to Envato and look at the new templates uploaded by absolutely everybody that you follow, you could select one or two key authors whose work you love and use and rate very highly so that when they do create and upload a new project, that individual is sent an email just saying:

“User_123 has a new project template called ‘Template_123’. Ciick here to check it out.”

I have used similar systems for online shopping sites where I can sign up for an alert when a product is out of stock so that I can guarantee I am among the first to know when new stock is in. I imagine there will be a lot of buyers out there who would want to be the first to get, use and upload a brand new template from their favourite author (or adhering to the important keywords in their search criteria) before anybody else.

The main point of this is that it is on the buyer to select who they want alerts from (if at all) and is not an automatic email sent out just because you follow someone.
