Hello. I am curious as to what kind of searching algorithm does the marketplace’s new search engine implements?

Thanks :)

It’s called the “Pot Luck and Squint Algorithm” :)

Edit: or are we not part of the small set of users it’s been ruled out to…
Until they announce “Implemented for 100% users”, there is no point in testing the search to find the improvements (as the changes are back end ones). It is easy to guess that currently the feedback form is for receiving bug reports if anyone finds. Wait..

You can see if you’re getting results from the new elasticsearch backend with this trick: Open a search results page source, and search the HTML for a comment that says:

<!-- elasticsearch beta -->

If the page HTML has that comment, then you’re getting search results from the new platform, if you don’t, then you’re getting it from the old. We put that in there so we’d know what the site was doing when we were testing it :)

The roll out is determined randomly based on your IP address. If it’s on for you on that connection, then it’ll be on for all requests you make.

Is the search algorithm a secret? Can you share it with us?

Hello. I am curious as to what kind of searching algorithm does the marketplace’s new search engine implements?

We’re just using the built in functionality in elasticsearch. The exact details of how we’re using it to do relevance boosting, and constructing the queries isn’t secret, we just haven’t made it public ;)

For the moment though, we’re mindful of getting it right first. After that, we need to find the balance between helping authors understand search, and not making it prone to gaming and nasty SEO tricks that hurt buyers and authors alike.

Well, no more numeric searches? :(
Hi Gomah – what do you mean by that?

On themeforest.net you can still do something like that: http://themeforest.net/search?term=2918523

Not anymore on graphicriver. :/

Hey Gomah

Thanks again for pointing that out. I’ve just deployed a code change to fix that. It should be working now if you enter a search term that matches an item numeric ID

OR functionality would be nice.

E.g. “happy OR upbeat”

Hi again – a quick update on the new platform roll out. As of today VideoHive and 3D Ocean will be completely on the new platform. We are increasing the % of new search users on CodeCanon and ThemeForest.

If you have any search related feedback or notice something that doesn’t look quite right – it would be great if you could let us know via the feedback form.

Firstly, thank you for working at marketplace functionality. Just 2 questions (maybe asked, sorry if so):

1) Search through the item’s comments, will it be?

2) Is there a search statistic for each marketplace? E.g. top 50 search terms for last month. This information will be really helpful to power the market

To add to alaja’s questions, 3) Can you integrate the search data with our analytics page? It would be very useful to see what people have searched within in the marketplaces to find my items. I would take the top 5-10 searched words/phrases and use them in my Google Adwords campaign.
