I’ve been working recently on a new template which I’ll be uploading shortly, and I thought I’d share it here in case anyone had any feedback. The other pages will be uploaded shortly.

Hi everyone,

First, here’s the link to the actual live version of this I submitted: http://www.derektoigo.com/assets/livesites/darklight

So I went ahead and tried to upload my “dark” version of this, but it was rejected because of the following:

“1) Several elements throughout your template need spacing improvements (whitespace, padding, margins, etc).

2) Your template has a good start but, as we have high standards, you will need to make some additional improvements in overall aesthetics and aspects such as typography, graphics, and spacing.”

I personally thought what I have was a good start and was quite visaully appealing, but the response I got in regards to why it was rejected seemed kind of vague, IMO , and I had difficulty seeing exactly what I need to fix. Does anyone have any thoughts or second opinions to share on this to help me interpret a little better what the reviewer might have meant?

Thanks.

I’m with you to be honest. Everyone goes on about how awesome the feedback is, but all I’ve had is the exact same replies as you, copy and pastes.

I’m not dissing the reviewers, I’m aware that they have alot of themes daily to accept, or deny, but surely 5mins writing some genuine feedback here and there wouldnt go a miss? It’d certainly get me more enthusastic about my designs. With the two copy paste responses I’ve had from my two previous design submissions, it’s put me off, and I’ve given them both up. I don’t see any of this great feedback people talk about =(

Sorry for doing this in your topic, but what should we be doing? Replying to the rejection email asking for further advice? Can we contact reviewers any other way to get some genuine feedback rather than a rejection? It’d be so more constructive to be able to get that genuine feedback that would bring these designs up. =)

Hi Derek,

Really like your theme, but I have to agree with the reviewer.

My suggestions:

Homepage: Enlarge the width of the main showcase image. Enlarge the width of the “our spacialties” so you get less white space. Also make the text as wide as the ‘new’ image width.

Works: Same as “Specialties” The widespace is to much here as well

Blog: Add images. it also has to sell visually ;-)

Contact: The form is a little bit to simple. Put some css styles in there!

Another note is the main navigation, I like the blue button in the original design. It also shows up as you hover the button. Add it when the button is ‘active’

Hope this helps you getting this item approved! Good luck!

Hi design is beautiful, there is a problem in the list, when I hover on it, background shows but button text color( anchor) is not changed until mouse is hovered on the text. You might want to change anchor to block. Else great work ;)

@ webdesigndeluxe – Thanks; as you can see I’ve already got it coded, but if I end up doing a major overhaul to the design which would take me a long time to do I’ll keep you in mind. I’ll also let you know if I’ve got any other designs I need coded for me in the future. :)

@ QwibbleDesigns – This was an issue I expressed to my reviewer earlier. As an author, the most important thing to me is the ability to get my work online in the fastest and most effective manner, while still providing quality. As such, I think that indeed, efftive feedback and good constructive feedback between authors and reviewers is important. I think that really you just have to give it your best and do everything you can to make it outstanding, and in the case you get rejected, hopefully you’ll get a good starting point with some strong feedback.

@ grubforce – Thanks so much for your feedback. I’m working on the updates now. :) If it helps and as long as there’s no problem with it, I can share the reviewer’s feedback here for more info regarding ways I can improve.

Thanks again to all.

@ abhin2cool – Thanks so much, working on that now.

@ everyone – I’ve posted my reviewer’s feedback in reponse to me below:

“1) The logo and navigation have a significant amount of space between them as well as above and below them. This is usually not an issue but the logo doesn’t provide a very strong anchor point leaving the extra space somewhat overwhelming and making the header feel empty.

2) The featured content area on the home page needs some improvements in typographical vertical rhythm. You might also consider reducing the space above and primarily below this section so it doesn’t feel so disconnected from the section below it.

3) The items in the “Our Specialties” section aren’t spaced equally in relation to the “We will work with you…” section. Also, the text below the images extends past the image area to the right making these element areas feel unbalanced.

4) The footer has a significant amount of space above it that makes the footer feel detached. This amount of space is unnecessary.

5) In the sidebar of the “About Us” page, the white blocks don’t appear to have balanced padding.

6) The “Our Work” page has the same issue as #4 as well as an unnecessary amount of space between rows.”
