It’s something that has been bugging me for long now – are there any themes at all that let users customize category and tag templates in a similar way to custom page builders?

Afaik many themes let users determine stuff like image sizes in category templates globally but not per category. Let’s say i wanna setup a magazine, differently sized thumbnails would make a lot of sense.

Rough guess there are themes in the wild which support this – but at least according to the descriptions and live demos i couldn’t find anything yet.

Would totally love to see themes with custom page building capabilities that also enable those for categories and tags.

Little background read here: http://www.ronnypries.de/blog/wordpress-pages-for-blog-layouts-bad-practise/

Or are there any Wordpress specific culprits that make this codewise impossible – any opinions?

I don’t see a reason why this could not be done from technical point, and it’s certainly an option that could be of interest to many customers.

The problem with this is because more and more themes are becoming responsive, it does not allow a huge amount of room where users can dictate every little aspect of the site.

The coder has either use percentages or use media queries to make a theme responsive, and if the user wants to choose sizes to a pixel then this needs to be done using media queries, which in turn means more coding because author needs to take into account all sizes, which again in-turn causes heavier code.

Most people who use wordpress do not have good servers, so making the coding heavier will dramatically alter the websites load times.

Sometimes less is more, and to cater for everyone is impossible.

Sorry for the misunderstanding then, i wasn’t specificly referencing to per pixel sizes but rather using the options which are often globally available per category.

I often stumble upon themes with a variety of blog layouts (1,2,3 columns) but afaik those can only be set once and for all instead of individually. Would make sense for bloggers, magazines, businesses who deal with different kinds of content.
