The more you fight piracy and illegal distribution of copyrighted digital goods, the stronger / more prevalent it will be.

While I don’t like it when people illegally download (especially when it’s my work), I completely disagree that it’s ruining the industry. The amount of exposure that is provided through illegal downloads is insane, and sometimes (most of the time), it’s the exposure that makes an artist (or designer or developer) successful. The more exposure one has, the more legitimate earnings they will make.

Just a small example, but I cannot tell you the number of artist’s CDs I have decided to purchase after downloading their music from a site such as megaupload.

@mordauk – I like how you admit to “stealing” music. So if the song was just ok and not great, did you still support the artist and buy the cd? I’m guessing no…. just sayin :)

Interesting discussion going on here guys! Just wanted to remind you all to keep it as unpolitical as possible as per the forum rules. I was surprised this morning when I woke up and read the news about this!

This is what needs to be kept in mind regardless of content. I believe this is just the tip of the spoon when SOPA and PIPA start coming into play (even though it was not a factor in this case as the bill has not been passed).

So basically it’s okay to be deceived into buying songs you won’t actually like (which some might calling being robbed) but not okay to “steal” music (which some might call sampling in this case)?

Totally agree, hopefully bills like SOPA will be stamped out in the coming months to preserve the freedom of the internet, it worries me, and I’m not even American.

To anyone who doubts the ‘legal’ uses of such file sharing sites need to step out of the cubicle and away from the tech world where everyone has their own hosting.

While I was in college everyone used file sharing sites for turning in assignments. Our professors would have us E-mail the links to them.

I ran a site of 70k+ young musicians from all over the world who used file sharing sites to collaborate on music together. I actually created a plugin to our system to allow our users to upload to a certain file sharing site directly from our site in an effort to make it easier for our users to collaborate.

There are real world ‘legal’ uses for file sharing sites(of which i barely touched on), to doubt that seems pretty insane to me, or maybe just shortsighted and selfish.

And it seems hard to keep this argument from being political. It is this same short sighted ‘protect my work at the cost of everyone else, i don’t care who gets hurt’ attitude that is at the base of the legislation being pushed through the US congress right now.
