yup you should assign at least 2gb per core in AE. Since AE forces you to leave some ram for other processes 16gb is not enough. I am going to upgrade to 64gb when I get my 12-threads processor. (Not so near future, though)

oh and another quick tip: you can download ae cs6 and use it for rendering only without license. This increases performance a lot compared to cs5!
