Well constructed argument for why the Mac App Store needs paid upgrades: http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2012/03/op-ed-the-mac-app-store-needs-paid-upgrades.ars

ThemeForest needs this more than better ratings or item forums. Discuss.

@ aaranmcguire — Authors should have a choice: free or paid updates (per update).

Should buying a $35 WordPress theme give free updates for life? It’s not sustainable.

The developer is continually investing time in fixes. If a business depends on that work then they will be happy to pay a small fee ($5) for continued updates. This gives the developer incentive to keep updating and improving. If he does a major rewrite or significantly improves features, he could choose to charge $20 for the update. The buyer chooses to upgrade or not based on their needs. Maybe they hire a developer to manage updates, or choose not to upgrade.

It’s important that everyone is equitably compensated for their time/money.

Here’s another no-brainer. I agree with what you’re saying. It makes perfect economic sense.

I agree 100%. We will not seen this in the next year or so, however, it’s a nice idea. The issue is that I have an old item which I created wayyy back in 2010, and since then, jQuery and other libraries have been updated. The issue is I would like to update it but it wouldn’t make sense to invest large periods of time since I don’t think I’ll get much out of it.

So yeah, this is a nice idea =)

This is an interesting idea. I don’t have anything specific to add at this point, just subscribing to replies really :)

inb4 OrganicBeeMedia says “it’s in the pipeline”.

how’d I miss that comment, and no I don’t recall this feature actually being discussed ever thing Ive jokingly said that its “in the pipe” has actually been discussed before :-) , but its a pretty brilliant idea especial for plugins/themes + the ability to purchases plugins…. then WordPress devs don’t have to put the “kitchen sink” directly in themes and create separate compatible plugins
