The Open Sans font seems to be the most preferred font these days. Is there any specific reason for it because it doesn’t seem to be a relative new font. I quite like it though because it seems to fit nearly any project I’m working on.

Yes, it’s easily the best multi-purpose free webfont these days. Plenty of weights and character sets. Good for body copy and headings. Universal yet modern looking sans-serif. There are a few as visually nice as this one, but they for example lack weights or character sets the Open Sans has.
