I just created an account to purchase a theme and I’m severely disappointed in the payment options here.

PayPal, which I and many other people refuse to use for a plethora of reasons, and Moneybookers, which is more or less a PayPal clone. Neither of which are run by a legitimate financial institution and are prone to freeze accounts on a whim.

If you want to use detached, third party payment solutions like this instead of a proper, integrated and direct payment system at least include Serve, which is run by an actual financial institution on their back end.

I’m not sure if I’ll be making a purchase here or not with such limited payment handlers.

Hey there HittingSmoke, I understand what you’re saying, but the fact of the matter still is that PayPal and MoneyBookers are systems that are used widely by users, and at the moment have more users than Serve or other payment systems.

These are the most common used choices for payments online. I for one am very satisfied with PayPal thus far!

PayPal is the biggest gripe as many people are shying further and further away from them ethically. I don’t want to get into a philosophical debate about censorship but there are too many places that only offer PayPal simply because they are the biggest, and for no other reason. I’m glad there was an alternative.

The Moneybooker site I’d never heard of, but upon a quick Google search there was a few alleged incidents of them freezing accounts with no recourse. This affects sellers more than buyers of course, but I’d still rather not do business with such entities. The reason I mentioned Serve is because it’s a service by American Express, which is a legitimate financial institution and short of fraud investigation or law enforcement intervention they’re not going to be freezing accounts on a whim without proper customer support.

I’d love to be a continued customer. I did buy my theme through Moneybooker and it went perfectly fine. It’s not a service I intend to make regular purchases using though.

100% agreed. Paypal is terrible (case in point, I’m trying to buy themes and can not, due to some unspecified Paypal error).

It makes no sense to remove reasonable choice for consumers when it comes to ways to part them with their money. I want to make a bog-standard credit card payment, it would take nothing to have a proper payment gateway to a proper bank.

I wouldn’t even bother except that there is a theme I really want to buy. Otherwise, I’d have clicked off your site as soon as I saw Paypal as the only payment gateway choice.

Hi there HittingSmoke,

Just wondering, would you be keen to try the deposit system the marketplaces has to offer? Put some credit onto your account and make purchases that way?

I can understand how users may prefer to make their purchases through a system like PayPal, Serve or Moneybookers, especially when they don’t make purchases too often. Just wondering if you would consider this possible alternative :)

Having PayPal and Moneybookers as the only options pales in comparison to forcing people to make deposits in limited amounts ($20, $40, $60 etc.). Offer wordpress themes at $40.00. Then raise the price to $45.00 after $40.00 is deposited. Forcing the person to deposit the lowest offered amount of $20.00.

Yea, the Moneybookers option is SO shady. Deposit option closes to the $40 theme is $50. Gee wiz, what a surprise. So I have to pay 20% extra because Themeforest refuses to provide a working checkout option.

You guys are way, way shady. Sooner or later some legit operation which doesn’t treat the customers are developers in this fashion will take all this business. Let’s hope, at least.

Hi folks, having other payment options is definitely important to us. I don’t have an exact timeline, but we’ll get there.

Agreed, I absolutely will not do ANY business with PayPal, which means I can’t do any business with Theme Forest. I guess I’ll be buying a more expensive template from [removed]....too bad.
