Hello! I need some help regarding a problem that I’ve bumped in today. Just as I was starting to do some work in Photoshop I’ve realised that when I use the rectangle tool the shape created didn’t appear in a new layer and it appeared just like a brush – in the same layer & rasterized. The same for for the custom shape tool or any kind tool used for making shapes.

Can you tell me how to fix this ? My guess is something simple like CMD /CTRL + something but I really don’t have a clue!

Thanks!

When the Shape tool is selected, a menu appears near the top of the screen. Select the “Paths” option. It will then generate a path rather than a filled, rastered shape.

Example picture here .

I’ve tried that and it doesn’t work at all. It’s basically the same thing it generates just the margins of the shape but in the same layer.

I assume you are creating a new layer and selecting it before using the shape tool.

No. Imagine this : You open a new file in Photoshop, you got the white background and you want to make a square shape in the middle of it. Select the tool – make the square and that square doesn’t appear in a new layer as a shape with the colour icon in the left and all the stuff. It just poppes in the same layer. Can’t be moved or transformed. I need to make a new layer anytime so that I can modify the shape.

It’s just like a brush – when you insert into a layer a brush. I don’t know how to explain any better.

I have just tested it (CS3). Sorry if i have misunderstood your problem.

Those 3 little icons at the top in the image i linked earlyer. Working from left to right.

1, Shape layers. Fills desired shape with foreground colour. Path is intact and it automatically generates a new layer.

2, Paths. Generates a path, no fill and no new layer.

3, Fill pixels. Fills the desired shape, path is destroyed and no new layer is created.

Sounds like you need to use the shape layer option.

Glad your problem is sorted.

Ive had moments like that myself while working on my illustrator skills.
