Excuse me for being blunt, but I would like to know by which criteria are you measuring “amateur”?
Stuff not working. Spacing not good. Fonts blurry. General things that you would expect to be properly taken care of. Even design. Some designs are just dated.

I see one of these on the front page right now which makes me go W.T.F to that after having this rejected.

I think that everybody could expect that Themeforest will attract more authors after some time. Price increase just probably only speeded up that process a little bit nothing else.

I think that the current list on the homepage and recent/popular themes is not enough with an increasing number of themes. The issue as I see it is that customers cannot properly search and filter out themes. They give up and select most selling one and that’s all. If there was a quick filter based on color, slider type, features or whatever else, they could limit their selection faster and themes will initially less sales would pop up.

Envato is not only increasing number of authors, they’re also increasing number of new customers if you watch it closely. The best solution here would be to find a way how to make these customers buying variety of themes not only the most selling ones that are on Popular Files list. That way each theme will sell in average few hundred times instead one rocketselling and another one just crawling and trying to survive. That way an income from sales would be more consistent and you can relay on it. Otherwise it’s a big gamble and most full time authors would have to move to part time again.

Totally agree with that. However, I still think that the standards of the new items have decreased and should be raised to the former level.

I suspect that Envato ppl are risking to start losing good authors, because, if they mind only overall sales and not individual author sales. And, if they start to lose good authors, they’ll start (and us too) to lose buyers too. They should be concerned about that submission (and acceptance ) flood quite a bit.
Solutions would be (IMO) :
  • limit the submissions per author monthly ( for example – max. 2 WP themes monthly, or even only 1 ..)
  • increase the quality and uniqueness standard (especially beware of authors copying their own work).
  • if category is flooded, temporarily put accepting themes on hold for that category

Perhaps (or better – hopefully) some clever heads in Envato will find a solution for this. They’ve been very clever so far, so I believe my hope they’ll do the right thing is justified …. ;)

And the worst part in my opinion. Is that none of the management staff, or the ones responsible for running themeforest and other market places, are replying with their plans or whatever they are trying to do about this issue.

An official word from them will bring reassurance among us authors and buyers.
