Homepage has been the same concept since i first entered this marketplace, when only AD was running and the project was almost on its startup. That’s the problem with homepage.

WP Titan has some good ideas. I actually think that will make more traffic on new themes and not only on themes that have random success.

Just fyi, from a very regular buyer’s perspective … I have never bought a single item via the homepage, in fact I never even go to the homepage. I go straight to http://www.themeforest.net/category/all every single time I visit, so I can immediately view all the very latest themes available…

As a buyer I’ve also never bought anything via the homepage. My bookmark is set to http://themeforest.net/category/wordpress so I can browser new themes to bookmark or keep in mind.

I’m also a separate market segment of TF buyers as I buy themes for clients so my buying process may be slightly different. With many features being so standard now they play a small part. Though I wander over to Mojo for a look see from time to time I’m too comfortable here and choose to stay. The price increase hasn’t affected my buying one iota, I’ve simply adjusted my website pricing just a tad, especially for sites using e-commerce themes as those prices have increased substantially.

I don’t care for tags and search terms, I need a ‘look’ that I feel matches the business that I’m doing the site for and it’s totally subjective for me. I feel safer with Elite authors and upwards from silver paws but occasionally give a ‘new’ author a chance if it feels right.

Lately there are way to many same old, same old themes, especially in the corporate/business category imo, and they’re becoming a nuisance.

Envato forces us to produce more and more work to get the little exposure we can get.

Exposure now is hard to get .. they don’t give it on the homepage, they don’t give it in the search (Just search for something like “Church” and you will see what come up, everything but church themes).

So now exposure is something rare, something valuable .. and the only way to get it, is by uploading often and consistently.

And that’s what Envato want, that you upload often .. no matter what the heck you upload as long as it goes barely over the “acceptable” line.

But you blame on the wrong person. It’s not Envato’s fault, it’s not author’s fault.

Who’s left? :) Buyers.

I have great respect for them, they pay my bills and my food, it would be silly to bite the hand that feed you. But the problem is that they buy the same theme over and over again.

What I’m saying is that with 1 of the theme in the popular list, with simple CSS I can reproduce 95% of the other themes right there. And that would eliminate all of the problems of exposure.

Buyers need to take 1-2 month of their lives and learn basic CSS because these days, they buy a theme just for 1 feature they are looking for .. instead of doing it themselve.

And as long as they will continue to buy crap .. author will serve them crap, and Envato will accept crap.

It’s all in the hands of buyers.

This is a surprisingly ignorant comment; completely inaccurate for some of us.

Think twice before you tar every single buyer with the same brush.

Dan

I agree, the homepage definitely needs rethinking.

Why not just paginate the new items and top sellers list in some way? – If the approach remains to place such reliance on these two mechanisms for buyers to find files, just let them browse more this way. At least then exposure wouldn’t drop dead from these mechanisms if the theme falls off the front page, or doesn’t make it to the top sellers page. Wouldn’t fix it, but would improve it somewhat.
