Well look here I leave the intertubes for a short while and it’s fantastic to see these responses – Chris, I don’t think it’s in the pipe bud, that’s the issue :) – plus this would not require any alterations to the marketplace at all – none – no time wasted – no staff tied up for months just a simple price increase.

With the advent of what I now class as super premium themes (premium being good quality and sell for a price – super premium being custom post types, multiple dedicated page templates, unlimited widget areas, custom admin panels, automatic this and that, they’re SUPER premium themes) – not to mention we now deal with WAY more browsers, and now responsive, and mostly higher acceptance standards… it’s just simply about time.

The envato elite thing as someone mentioned is now, sorry for saying it like this, a joke – means nothing apart from a graphical badge that don’t put food on the table Envato.

My gas has gone up, my food has gone up… oh wait EVERYTHING has gone up – but my TF items stay the same – it’s not a question of if this should happen but more a fact of why has it not happened yet.

Thanks everyone – love the feedback, and buyers, I thank you most of all for taking the time to join in and express from the other side of the cash register that I’m right..

the themes are just to damn cheap ;)

Jonathan

I believe landing pages are too low. Although a landing page only involves one page, it still takes a developer 3-7 days to complete. $8 is not enough :(

but again, everything is too low priced as per the outline of the thread – not just one category.

Correct, and I completely agree with all templates receiving a mandatory price increase. The price of living doesn’t stop just because Envato remains stagnate with their updates… Gas is now $4 a gallon here and an extra dollar on 67 sales is $67… Just imagine if they increased the price of every template by $4? I’ve now made 268 more dollars..

The best part about it is, users wouldn’t have one problem investing that extra capital because of one sole reason, it’s an “investment.” A lot of these customers we’re receiving will purchase a theme, build their dream website, then never return to ThemeForest ever again. Shouldn’t we take advantage of that extra $4-5? Every single aspect of the business would benefit…

Hell, just call it a “surcharge” Envato! I have yet to find one competing marketplace on the internet that contains such amazing templates…

why not when approving the theme, there are two options; for high quality themes, prices can go up to $ 50, and the themes that are good but are of lower quality will go up to $ 35,

I completely agree with jonathan01! Just have a look at the prices from Admin Templates. In cases of 75% the buyer needs the extended license (in case of an Admin Template), but nobody buy it. In my opinion it’s a really great idea to increase the regular prices (and maybe decrease the extended license) in all categorys. :)

Don’t you think it’s about time prices were increased? Let’s discuss. Jonathan

I agree totally, because not that you just make templates with great features and details, you deal after with a lot of support work. I know that support is not must, but i think that buyers doesn’t know this and they expect it. If you want better rankings, sales than this is also important part. And all of this comes with the price of the theme. At the other side we become here great promotion, inspiration, contacts, support and lot of other great stuffs but maybe some higher price wouldn’t be bad :)

That’s the reason I decided to sell my WordPress themes rather on my own shop. Getting $18 for a WordPress theme design, code (widgets, etc), documentation, PSD .. while the buyers sell it forward to their clients for $ X,XXX… BAH ! It’s just not worth it.

I agree that the prices need to be reviewed and increased.

Not only has the quality of the themes gone waaaaay up meaning authors are putting more time into their work, but the cost of living has gone up also. Because of inflation (different for each country/currency) this means that year on year, the amount our earnings is worth has actual gone down by several % per year.

  • So the standards have gone up (increasing the value for the buyer)
  • The prices have stayed the same (decreasing the value for the author)
  • Inflation means our earnings don’t stretch as far as the previous year.

Not good, not good at all. Envato has probably the best theme portfolio of any online marketplace, so the buyers will still come. They also understand that each year everything must rise its price to at least keep pace with inflation. Heck they have probably already raised their freelance rates for this same reason. So there is only one loser in this situation and guess what, it’s the Authors. Hurrrrray!
