I know Dave ( aka DTBaker ) started a thread about this a while ago, I am sure it was QuadCopters. So I just wanted to know if anyone had used the following:

1. DJI Phantom Quadcopter or similar …

2. GoPro

If so have you any images you can share, experiences etc. We are lookign at possibly investing in one of these for a little curiosity venture we are crunching.

The issues from what I can glean from internet, are vibrations thru to the Camera. But that is about it.

Yer vibration through the camera will be easier to deal with than vibration through the onboard sensors. Shouldn’t be an issue on any popular kit quad/hex copter.

My very hastily built (and cheap) hexacopter had quite a few vibrations. You can see some of them flow through to the gopro camera feed in this flight: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGBFGNwv-x4 Even when hovering in the same spot the vibrations were sometimes so bad that the thing would try to compensate for what it thought was movement – all sorts of issues!

Definitely buy a kit if you’re doing any serious camera work :P or just learning to fly like I was then a cheap diy frame wouldn’t hurt

These devices can be a lot of fun. I have a slightly larger “hexicopter” also fitted with a gopro. You can get totally unique shots simply because you can fly almost anywhere. You certainly need good light to get the best quality from the gopro. And yes, jello effect can certainly spoil images with straight lines where you end up with funny jinks and waves in the straight lines. this is caused by vibrations in the flying machine. Isolating the camera using foam, gimbals, is helpful. Keeping the machine in good condition is helpful such as replacing props as soon as they take a knock. If there are no straight lines in the photo it probably is not an issue.

Really sorry about this… I keep finding interesting stuff ever since you opened this thread. I know it’s somewhat unrelated to your initial question, but thought you guys might enjoy watching this regardless :)

If you’d like me to stop, please let me know. :P

p.s: this is not completely off-topic, as the last Quad is carrying a gopro haha

Cool stuff. Now we just need to add a sound module to the quad and some MIDI to those spatial algorithms so that the quad generates music as it moves in space. :)
