Hey guys! I would like buy macbook air 2013 for work outside. Does anybody use it for writting tracks? How it copes with the tasks? P.S. 4gb RAM and 1,3 GHz
Well, it depends on what kind of tracks you write I suppose… If you’re just doing electronic music or music with audio tracks mostly with not too much processing it will be fine.
But, if you’re doing more advanced sessions with 10-20 instances of Kontakt or GuitarRig it will be very slow I’m afraid. You really need a MacBook Pro (high-end) to really enjoy modern music making with lots of tracks without freezing them all the time.
My session is about 10 instances of Kontakt and vst plug-in. So, will be macbook pro (8 ram) good choice? Which CPU to choose?
Well, the best CPU you can afford is the answer. A quad-core i7 will of course be much faster when it comes to CPU intensive stuff.
I have the 15” 2.3Ghz quad-core i7 with 16GB and it can handle a lot. HOWEVER, I have maxed it out on some Logic projects with lots of Kontakt instruments and reverbs going on.
I guess it comes down to that you can always max out your system no matter what you have, but get the best your budget allows for and it might not happen too often. 8GB of RAM is enough most of the time, especially if you update the Kontakt sample pools to get rid of samples you don’t use, but 16 is nice of course.
