Hey guys,

I am looking into upgrading my Hostgator shared server package to a VPS. I was looking at Hostgator’s VPS but was told by their staff that Level 3/4 VPS package is similar to their shared hosting packages in performance, and that Level 5 and upwards is when performance increases. However, Level 5 is about $100 recurring a month, which sounds like a lot to me.

Can any authors recommend a good VPS or if you are using Level 5 + on Hostgator, let me know of your experience so far? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys :)

Paying $100 to hostgator is nuts. Their VPS offerings are not really VPS at all IMO. If you want to pay that much, you’d probably be better off with something like the “Professional” plan at WPEngine.com

Migration to WPE (or any host) should be easy and can be made even easier by using WP DB Migrate Pro by Delicious Brains (just web search for it).

I would definitely recommend checking out ASO ( A Small Orange ) before upgrading with Hostgator. I found out about them through the forums here, and never looked back!

Thanks for the tips guys. I quite like the look of A Small Orange, can you tell me what package you currently use? Are you using a VPS?

I am using their Cloud VPS hosting. I am overall really pleased with their services and most of all top notch support!

They offer free migration for you, and also there is an ongoing promotion now with 50% off the first invoice, so if you order something for let’s say 6 months or a year you will get a huge discount. You can find the promo code on their homepage.

Take a look to DigitalOcean. A few days ago I subscribed to a plan($10) and I’m still experimenting with it. You can try it and get the smallest package, witch is $5, then if you like it, upgrade.

I have Ubuntu/PHP5-FPM/PHP-APC module/NGINX+Varnish. It’s super fast. Wordpress pages are loaded in max 1 second.

(Still can’t figure how to enable multisite :P)

Note: It’s unnmanaged VPS.

I’m running a dedicated server at hostdime.com and the speed is good. The server included 2nd hdd for daily backup. ( 115$ plan ).

For VPS, go for ASO and you will love it :)

KnownHost is a very good VPS company, I would run with them personally.

For VPS, Linode has a +1 from me. We use a unmanaged VPS from them and we couldn’t be happier in terms or reliability and speed.
