ok ok. I am SERIOUSLY starting to froth at the mouth here over Canon Raw video.

The idea of using a bog standard Canon 5D to record true uncompresssed 4k video equiv to a £20,000 Red is just too much to bear.

Can ANYONE confirm if this thing really works for them, explaining the steps they took?

Has anyone uploaded VH stock footage of this yet?

I understand it records in a base .DNG format.

How do you open this .DNG format? After Effects? Quicktime Pro ?

And roughly how much footage would i get on a 64gb CF ?

Would it fry my camera ?

questions…questions…questions…?

First of all, it’s not 4K. RAW doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s 4K. The 5DMK3 (with ML firmware) can record 14 bit RAW video at 1920×1080 24fps. The bit depth is the hype here, it certainly is exciting. The Black Magic camera offers only 12 bits per channel. In this way the 5DMK3 is superior and inferior to the RED only in resolution.

This certainly works, check out the amazing stuff that’s circling around everywhere in the internet, check out this link to see the workflow for recording RAW:

http://nofilmschool.com/2013/05/how-to-get-started-magic-lantern-raw-video-canon-camera/

It records as a .DNG sequence which now comes out of the camera as an .exe file which can be decoded using the raw2dng module ML created:

You can directly import the .dng sequence right into After Effects as an image sequence. If you’ve shot RAW pictures, you’d know the Camera Raw plugin in Photoshop, the same interface pops up in After Effects so you can do all the editing. I tried it, and it’s fabulous. It feels like .cr2 RAW, but video!

For the best recording a 1000x CF card is recommended, and there’s a 4GB limit for now, ML will surpass that in the future ;)

No it won’t fry your camera, if you take the steps right and carefully. I can assure you that, since I have meddled a lot with the ML firmware. If anything goes wrong, it’s a user-failure ;) ML runs off the memory card, and it doesn’t change anything on the camera’s actual firmware.

Post some stuff here, if you get it working. :)

Good Luck.

About 12 min per 64gb.

4gb limit resoved. ML writes sequence of 4gb files.

This is actually wins the ‘Stating The Obvious Prize’. . THe reply ‘I’ll take the Red’. Of course ANYONE if offered in one hand a Canon 5D, and the other hand a RED – of course they’ll take the RED! Why stop at RED? why not take a ARRI 8K? Panavision 90mm Deluxe? ...

The idea of the post was in no way to compare a $2,000k camera and a $20,000 camera. The idea of this post is to say that for those of us with a 5D, you can get results just as high quality as a RED EPIC.
