This is how new generic messages for the inspired themes looks like:

1) Your template does not provide a unique enough design with the necessary design quality, features and options to compete in the marketplace at this time. As higher quality templates become available in the marketplace, approval requirements will increase to maintain appropriate marketplace quality.

2) You might consider improving your design with more unique features and graphics in order for it to stand out among other marketplace items. Adding features, options and styles will help increase your template’s value and increase its ability to be approved. However, a unique design will be a key factor for approval.

Theme in question can be seen here: http://business.letterpress.ws/

And this is response of the reviewer after i asked what’s wrong with my theme:

1) It looks similar to other templates.

2) The overall design, typography, colors, graphics needs improvements. Especially the front page.

Can someone tell to which template my theme is similar because I’m sure that overall design, typography, colors and graphics are OK.

Not only Display, but also this: http://themeforest.net/item/los-angeles-a-premium-wordpress-theme/full_screen_preview/84768

I think the rejection is based more on the overall look than how it’s similar to other templates. You should really work more on the design itself. I am sure that if you would improve the design, change some little things, it would be accepted. The layout is similar, but it’s a basic layout so you can keep that. But some elements are really similar (navigation, background gradient). You should pretty much rework the colors and typography (all fonts looks bad now) to improve the design. The div structure is quite OK, just play with css and images. Oh and those black 1px lines doesn’t look good imo, too much contrast, a little out of place, but maybe someone likes it i dunno…

Also your grid, mainly the vertical one could be much improved.

Recommend you this article: http://www.alistapart.com/articles/settingtypeontheweb

Here is a nice example of the vertical grid: http://sushiandrobots.com/ (notice how everything is strictly set on the lines of 18px vertical grid)

Study it a little bit and you will get it, it’s really easy and helps a lot (less design decisions, better consistency, etc.).

Please don’t take it as a critique, I am a nice person who just wanted to give some tips, cheers mate! :)

So what do you “complainers” (just kiddin) think about this one? Is it OK are NOT for you? Please no personal flame, just tell us your cold professional opinion, ok or not, thanks. (let the personal flame to be handled privately, it’s not our thing)

To be quite honest, I think Inspired was the wrong term for Jeffery to use as it’s rather broad. Although, What he should’ve used… well, That’s something I’m not so sure about. Maybe something like Similar..

You can be inspired, but still, not copy other templates, if that makes sense?

All in all, What I’m saying is take inspiration from some of the great authors here, but take the ideas you’ve gathered and make it into something that is your own, unique and not necessarily a similar copy in some way, shape or form.

When you take a good, long, hard look from a 3rd person perspective here at the market places at the nearly 46,000 items you start to find some flow in repetition and commonality appearing among the files – in particular Themeforest.

What we need to understand is not that they are rejecting inspired themes, but Envato and the Whole Marketplace Team are trying to bring more Unique files to the community – Of course with any business decision it is going to affect your customers, and with it hopefully being the right decision – you will always tick some customers off, although in the end the only benefit is to everyone. I mean, Authors become more creative and the more innovative the template is means more $$$. Buyers find really great files, something not found elsewhere and something that stands out.

Looking back on some top selling themes – you realise that when they came about they were new, fresh and had something to offer that nothing else did.

(I write down my ideas in what ever order i think of them, sorry if they’re a bit everywhere).

Take for example Google, Do you think if they released their search engine that was basically the same as Yahoo – manually entered & slow – that they would be the multi billion dollar company they are today? No, they would not be – with innovation, further development and refinement they have become Numero Uno in the search industry, and if you ask people about searching the first thing they say is Google.

This is exactly what Envato are trying to bring about in their authors, All in all, We should be grateful as not only does it mean we build better stuff here, but it affects us in every other way – it assists in our Full-Time work, Education, Social Life, etc.

I hope my view can be helpful to some of you in some way :)

Every single thing ever created, or will be, owes its existence to inspiration.

It’s OK for me… The elements that are similar are still way too common around the web… and neither of those Authors thought of them first…

If you’re going to question that one, then you’ve got to question this one:

[Link removed]

It has many of the same common elements and layouts… This is why rejecting inspired themes could get ugly…

As I stated before in the last thread… You can’t design and build your own simple house and then yell at the neighbor for having doors and windows on theirs….
