Hello lads,

We have just had to deal with our 6th rejection to date. But that’s really fine with us, we just want to make a better product. (If you feel like giving us a hint regarding our template, please check this thread here: http://themeforest.net/forums/thread/rejected-again-seeking-for-more-feedback/136131).

The reason of this thread actually is:

I, the designer at NuminaThemes, am really looking forward in applying ONLY for a ThemeForest reviewer job. Why is that?

First of all, from what we have noticed, whenever you get a hard rejection, you’re not being told why that is. Instead you get a generic type of e-mail which doesn’t really help you at all. Although you seek guidance in the community forums here, I find it pretty hard to get a couple of answers on what to improve. I do understand people’s time is quite precious and probably they don’t spend it on the forums here. From my point of view, this is the reviewer’s job and a couple of hints such as:

“Bad typography, incorrect elements spacing, doesn’t validate, etc”...

would only take a ‘couple of seconds’ to write, but it would definitely HELP the author. It’s the fact that we’re spending a lot of time into developing a product and improving it to get it to the standards it’s probably no big deal for any of us, but we don’t have a clue at this time in what direction to go.

Secondly, the reviewing time it’s simply too long. While watching the forums, and seeing that everyone is complaining about this, there is nothing to be done but rather hire a couple more reviewers.

For example, we have waited an average of 7 days / submission. This is really bad for both parties and I will tell why..

In our particular example, this was our 6th submission and it got hard rejected again. It’s fine, no worries, but 2 months have passed since we have actually finished the product, we have even reworked it from scratch in all this time and still we can’t get it going. It definintely looks like a lose – lose situation.

The fact that in this time you can work on other projects / themes / etc it’s ok, but waiting a couple of months for a new author to get him going on the marketplace, is really really sad.

Also, I have no clue on a reviewer’s working time, but from what I have noticed, Friday – Tuesday, only a couple of themes get reviewed to none. This looks unacceptable to me.

From my point of view, Envato should really consider hiring a couple more reviewers. That’s already been said and said in this forums.

Why I would like such a job for myself?

I love helping people. I’ve been there and know what’s it like to feel helpless and abandon a project which could bring in some good revenue to an average guy. Whenever it comes to hard rejecting a theme, I’d like to take a couple of minutes of my free time to give everyone an explanation of why I’ve got to that decision and HELP them improve!

Secondly, I’d really like spending my extra free time in reviewing themes. I could do that 16hrs a day (including weekends). Yes, that’s right. I know that that is fun and having the themes reviewed in less time would definintely bring in a smile on authors’ all over the world faces!

And least but not least, the experience. Although I am an WordPress guru and a design lover, I totally agree that this won’t qualify me as a reviewer. I guess that takes special training by the team, but who wouldn’t love to go through that?

So, Envato, if you’re looking for someone special who thinks that complaints on the reviewing process should be dropped, I’d love to talk with you about that!

Meanwhile, would love to hear what people think about this and if they consider that there is enough “space” for the better.

Have a great day, Daniel – NuminaThemes

6th submission and still rejected? You have my sympathy but you are obviously doing something wrong! You need to take a hard look at your works in comparison to the big sellers on here and then brush up on your skills! It not about the reviewers, its about inadequate design.

good luck!

So let me get this straight … you have no idea how to create a good design and you want to be a reviewer on the marketplaces?

Your theme looks good, although you need to get a designer (maybe developer too, i’m no code guy) who knows all the little tricks and tips to get your theme uploaded. But as reviewer said, mostly typography and spacings.

Hello buddies,

Thanks for the replies!

@goofydadog Thanks buddy, yet each rejection does lead you in no direction at all. The reason I have created this thread is hopefully to change that. I see couple of threads about this fact started on the forums every single day.

@KrownThemes I guess I could take the time to learn that. I do know how to design. Have several awards on namely websites (such as Dribbble, DeviantArt, etc.). My partner is also part of the game handling the code mostly, but he does have a couple of themes approved over here.

So, even if the design sucked (you can check it yourself at that topic’s link), guess the best practice for this was to let us know about it. This is where I want to get.

@maartin Thank you for your input, but that’s not what a reviewer has told us. We simply got rejected with no reason at all but rather the generic message.

They have been recruiting recently for a reviewer.

My guess is that it takes someone very special who is not just an expert is design and development but also has a keen business sense and vast experience and knowledge of the marketplace itself.

For what it is worth the delay is not especially about the number of reviewers only. It is heavily influenced by the hundreds of submissions they must get a week and the large % of rubbish that they have to at least look at which takes time. Also faster reviews mean les exposure on the homepage which will cause more complaints. It is a catch 22 and I believe they do a great job as it is.

I can see the small errors you have in there – but I honestly don’t understand how this got rejected as there are much worse items than yours.

By the way, there are many things that give you away as a “not that great designer” :)

1) http://i.imgur.com/46DBi8J.png That initial animation on the dropdown..no.
2) http://i.imgur.com/N6cdudD.png Always image before title (well, it’s not really a rule, but it just seems that every site has it this way, so it’s a pattern users are used to.)
3) http://i.imgur.com/1MZMXXM.png Why the spaces (The hover state of a page)? It looks unnatural.
4) http://i.imgur.com/SmlwNZK.png Those arrows should be centered.
5) http://i.imgur.com/ZKGIh5t.png Please don’t use motion this way, it has no meaning (the hover state of a tag). If, for example, I hover a tag and I come from the bottom, the motion should be this way: tag fills up from bottom -> top and the other way around for when I hover from top to bottom.
6) http://i.imgur.com/HOLk3if.png Those borders for each post, they’re not the same color as the border and it makes it look awful.
7) http://i.imgur.com/ttTNGTu.png

Also, there’s shown a lack of knowledge when it comes to some technologoies. Some small reading would show you that almost nobody uses 250×250.:

https://support.google.com/adsense/answer/2953032?hl=en

You know, it’s not the big picture that makes you recognize somebody who knows his stuff, it’s the little details. As with everyone, we all have flaws, but yours seem to be lack of attention to details.

Also, there are some font issues: 1) The slider main news text – What is that?!

Just some tips, for you.

Charlie, nobody said they are not doing a great job, sure they are. The issue I find here is that it takes way too long to wait for a rejection and this is not good for any author out there.

@themeflame – Thanks very much for the suggestions, though we don’t consider these to be such major ‘design related’ issues that the design wouldn’t have passed by.

A couple of notes on your points:

2) There are a bunch of themes out there that do the same. It’s a pretty game changer on a magazine theme, we consider.

7) What do you think that’s wrong with those elements?

Regarding the ads. The theme has 4 sidebar layouts choices and so the user could easy change their ad size or preferences regarding the widgets.

Also, what’s wrong with the slider news text font?

Thank you very much guys, Daniel

Almost all my PSDs (with one exception that was a major fail) got approved in the first shot and almost never had issues regarding design on other themes except Zephyr. I think I’d know and I say that yea, they’re issues that get you rejected.
How is 2) a game changer? :D It’s nothing, really. Nobody cares and I seriously haven’t seen a theme that does that yet. I’m pretty sure nobody does that.

I didn’t write on 7 because I thought it was obvious.7.a Why the regular “z” but the other ones are bold?

7.b – not centered, obviously.

@ The Slider font – it just looks terrible, it just feels that way. Plus, if the title is a bit longer, it’ll get messed. It’s just way too thin and the character spacing doesn’t feel right.

By the way – what I really meant by my first statement in the first comment is that “Well, I know I’d reject it, but there are many other themes that look worse.”, guess I was just in a hurry. Altough, they don’t have the issues you do.

Also if you don’t already use them, I recommend using an 1140 grid / 24 baseline (Google up baseline, it’s literally a game changer when it comes to good design and I only found out about it recently!)
