Demo
I’ve been working on a html template for more than a month. It has been rejected 4 times (sigh)...I’ve worked very hard on this template. I’ve posted on the forum for feedback. Got some good replies, worked on those issues and submitted again and unfortunately got rejected again and again. I’ve posted it on FORRST and I got very good response there..21 likes within 2days..That proves the design is not too bad.

Now I have no idea what I should do. Because when I ask for feedback most people says this is good. But the reviewers give common rejection messages. I asked for more feedback via support ticket. But unfortunately haven’t heard anything from them. In this situation, I’m thinking of giving up (after months of hard work and valuable time) :(
Its really so frustrating.

I’m posting the rejection messages sequentially:

=== Why We’ve Declined Your Submission ===

Your template has a good start but, as we have high standards, you will need to make some additional improvements in overall aesthetics and aspects such as typography, graphics, and spacing.

Try to make your template’s design more unique. Attention to detail and unique graphic styles will help increase your template’s design value and increase its ability to be approved. A unique design will be always a key factor for approval.

I know it’s frustrating to be rejected citing uniqueness but recently, we’ve gotten a large number of template with the same overall features and presentation and we have to draw the line somewhere.

I think we’re reached a point of saturation. At this point, we’re only looking for unique variations of this design: for another one to be approved it would have to have a couple of unique touches and features that differentiate it from what’s already available and definitely be of higher quality.

From [reviewer 2 name removed by mod]:
Right now, I’m seeing too many issues that I can’t possibly point out what needs to be fixed. So for now, look to tweak and polish this template. With improvements, I’ll hopefully be able to be more specific. For now, please use the following as guidelines:

1. There are a few inconsistent spacing/padding as well as alignment issues throughout the design. I’d like you to go over it with a fine toothed comb and weed out these basic design issues.

2. Please look into how you’re using white space—both micro and macro. It needs to be intuitive, consistent and frame the content correctly in the manner you seek.

3. Overall typography and visual + typographic hierarchy needs additional refinements and improvements before it will be ready for Theme Forest.

4. Important— try to make your theme’s design more unique. Adding features, options and styles will help increase your template’s value and increase its ability to be approved. However, a unique design will be a key factor for approval. Try experimenting with different layouts, placement and positioning etc

5. Even with the current design, a significant increase in the polish of the various aspects of the theme may just swing the decision in your favor. Right now, it doesn’t feel like a premium theme due to the lack of attention to details.

Two main issues here:

1. This still feels very, very generic. I know it’s frustrating to be rejected citing uniqueness but recently, we’ve gotten a large number of template with the same overall concept and presentation and we have to draw the line somewhere.

I think we’re reached a point of saturation. At this point, we’re only looking for unique variations of this design: for another one to be approved it would have to have a couple of unique touches and features that differentiate it from what’s already available and definitely be of higher quality.

2. Overall attention to detail and imagination is simply not there: http://screencast.com/t/jwEqYOCFakF

I’m really confused. Please suggest me what should I do?

Hi tultul,

If the sample at the link http://screencast.com/t/jwEqYOCFakF and http://www.techsmith.com/jing.html, is the actual HTML template, then it does lack what I call unique and clean design.

The above looks nicely ordinary and am not excited or strongly attracted to it or a client experience with it. I do not know what else to say, but try again!

Hi Peter,

Thanks for your comment. But I’m not sure where did you find that techsmith.com link?? that is obviously not my template.

This is the DEMO of my template.

Template looks really good and i love it. Its better then 50% of templates i saw on themeforest, but… there is a lot of unneeded white space and its not really “unique”.

For example, on contact page, there is 80pixels of white space between boxhead and text. I think its a bit to much and if i bought template i would defenetly change it. As on big resolutions/monitors it might not be to much, but on small ones it is. Same with the header and boxhead, and i also saw that most of the time u are using 40px margins, for me it might be a bit to much.

Not sure regarding typography, as for me it seems fine, but as someone said, something that looks good for you, might not look good for envato staff and most important vice-versa.

You should definitely not give up

Just giving advices from aspect of buyer, what i would change if i was to buy your template. But it definitely have potential.

And for unique, its not really unique, but its much better looking then other similiar templates that you can find on themeforest.

The start is pretty good.

I have to point out 2 or 3 things:

  • The patterns used inside content area don’t really look nice, and mostly these images should be used for webpage backgrounds only.
  • Macro spacing is neglected and does not provide a real design, but more like a child play.
  • The buttons don’t seem to use the best padding, I mean buttons like Read more and Get in Touch white buttons.
  • Personally I don’t like Yanone font, it’s much too dirty compared to so many more out there.

Generally the design need polish and more unique elements. This is I think the main reason for your rejection.

Further more, improving typography will greatly improve the design. (Headings, paragraphs, micro-spacing, etc)

Oops I’m so sorry about that. Thanks for correcting. Yes, patience is virtue, I know. But sometimes, specially after getting a rejection mail its kinda difficult. I will try though :)

Thanks dnp_theme for your comments.
I thought the pattern will make the content area different. But I’ll try other possibilities too.

For macro and micro spacing, I guess I have lack of concept. I would like to know more about it.

For the buttons, you are right! There IS some padding issue, will sort it.

And finally for the fonts, I see Yanone font is quite popular and I like it too. Its my personal opinion though.

Thanks again for the feedback. I really appreciate that.
