single use license question

I have a question regarding the “single use” license.

In case of a product with many files inside. (like 101 backgrounds) Does the license allow the buyer to use each of the 101 backgrounds one time or he/she has to pick any one of the 101 backgrounds and use that only once? (Backgrounds is just an example, there could be plenty of other examples as well) It’s not clear at all and I think it needs clarification, especially in the written license itself.

This is an excellent question. It is obvious from these kinds of files that the author intends the file to be used more than once, just like actions, styles and addons, icons, etc…

AFAIK Technically a single use means a use in a single project. This is obviously a problem. For your example it means that the 101 backgrounds could be used in a single project only. I may be wrong, but I can only interpret because as you say this is not a simple and clear problem. To err on the side of caution is probably best from a buyers point of view, and at microstock prices this is usually feasible albeit slightly irritating.

Technically it means nothing when ‘single project’ isn’t defined.

Single Use License

Another way to look at it is on a per-site basis. You can use any or all of the backgrounds on mysite1.com but you can’t use any on mysite2.com. This is assuming mysite1.com is a single ‘application’.

Having something like mysite1.com/mygardeningblog and mysite1.com/mycarblog would require a separate license for each as each is clearly a separate site (application).

from the given example, i understand the single use licence apply for each of the 101 backgrounds to be used only once…doesnt matter on what project. As based on Groady’s example this would translate to the following: Background #3 from the package can be used on mysite1.com and Background #67 can be used on mysite2.com. Here the single use licence apply for individual files in the package…not for the complete package, this means any of the backgrounds in the package can be used only once.

Idealy, you dont include many files into 1 package, but create smaller packages like 5 backgrounds maximum and this way you give the buyer better options to select only the backgrounds they may need for their project.

But if it is as you say, who would want to pay $1.- for five backgrounds and use it for 5 different projects if they can pay $1.- for 101 backgrounds and use them on 101 different projects?

If it actually works like that, sooner or later someone who doesn’t care will come up with a 1001 background package and the guy with the 101 backgrounds will be out, while the standard will become no less than a few hundred backgrounds because less won’t be purchased.

Who’d pay $0.25 a background when they can pay only $0.001?
