Well since the glorious invention of Flat Design, now anyone can design a website with basic knowledge of PhotoShop.

You will need..

  • A Grid layout to work with… google Bootstrap or 960 PSD grids
  • iPhone and Mac related mock ups
  • A pack of free resource vector icons (make sure they’re allowed for commercial purposes)
  • Placeholder imagery featuring other digital artists work (make sure you have permission)
  • Muted grays and pastel colour palette
  • Helvetica Fonts, or anything that was ever used on Apple iOS
  • Design with responsive in mind so when designing your theme, pretend your desktop monitor is a very large iPhone screen

  • And remember with Flat Design, keep it minimal, keep it simple, don’t fuss about body copy (no one reads that stuff anymore – it’s all about the icons and images these days), and big chunky buttons is always better.

    Good luck :)

If you really interested in making PSD themes for themeforest, i suggest you to buy a PSD template from themeforest, by this way you can get idea how to play with layers, their naming and proper arranngement of the layers.

Sorry that’s not a good idea at all.

The idea is to create your own PSD from scratch. And the ONLY way to really learn how to do this, is to just start designing one yourself and you’ll learn as you go along.

The only suggestions when it comes to creating a PSD, is to 1) use Grids 2) Use folders to organize your layers, 3) Name your layers appropriately and 4) Use smart objects and vector layers so it’s easy for buyers to customize.

Otherwise there is no set way to create a PSD… it just has to be well organized, easy to customize and have a good design.

Are you talking about the structure of the file or the actual visual appeal of it? If you mean the later then you need to go right back to basics and learn typography, spacing, visual hierarchy etc etc (just Google it there are tons of tutorials) but not tutorial can teach you how to make something that looks good – only the process and technicalities behind how it should be put together
