Is there any possibility to create any bar chart in AE?
the chart should change when we change some text layer.
The text layer string should affect scale value of other layer. Is it possible??

Yes… you’d need to be a bit more precise though… which parameters do you want to change? The height of the bars? The number of bars? The colours of the bars? The width of the bars?

How to Build a Simple Bar Chart From a Text Layer

Is there any possibility to create any bar chart in AE?
the chart should change when we change some text layer.

I want to change tha height and No of bars.

There are many ways to achieve what you want to achieve. Here’s one way…

Edit: I’ve made an 18 minute tutorial video to accompany this post, that gives you a little more insight into the process used in this technique. You can find it here

  • Make a text layer and call it “Bar Chart Control”.
  • Make it a Guide Layer
  • Put this text into the text layer;
[120, 400, 56, 534]
This represents the number of bars and the height of the bars in pixels.
  • Now make a Null Layer and call it “Bar Chart Null”
  • Make a white Solid, 100 pixels wide and 1000 pixels tall. Rename it “Bar 1”
  • Set its Anchor Point to be [0, 1000];
  • Make this layer the child of layer(“Bar Chart Null”)
  • Add an expression Slider effect to layer(“Bar 1”).
  • Name the effect “bar_index” and set its value to 1
  • On the scale of layer(“Bar 1”) paste the following expression:
// Reads the "Bar Chart Control" text, evaluates to an object Array. Reads the layer's
// "bar_index" value and sets height to the corresponding value from the array.

var sizeArray = thisComp.layer("Bar Chart Control").text.sourceText.value;
var sizeArray = eval(sizeArray);
var myIndex = thisLayer.effect("bar_index")(1).value;
if(myIndex>sizeArray.length) {
    [0,0];
} else {
    var tHeight = 100* sizeArray[myIndex-1]/thisLayer.source.height;
    [100, tHeight];
}
  • On the position, paste this:
// Looks at the layer's own "bar_index" value and sets its
// horizontal offset from the parent layer accordingly

var myIndex = thisLayer.effect("bar_index")(1).value;
[thisLayer.source.width*1.1*(myIndex-1), 0];
  • Now duplicate up layer(“Bar 1”) as many times as you like, changing the value of the “bar_index” effect for each one.
  • The bars will automatically arrange themselves into the bar chart. Any bar layers with a higher index than the maximum bars defined by layer(“Bar Chart Control”) – more than 4 in this case – will remain invisible.

You can change the height of the bars and the number of bars by changing the text in layer(“Bar Chart Control”). You can move and resize the entire bar chart using the layer(“Bar Chart Null”).

Hey, I’d like to study creating plug-ins for AE, what’s a good thing to start with? A book, some articles or authors?

Thanks.

afaik, plugins are written in c++, so that’s where I would start.

Hey guys! Have a interesting question here(at least for me :))... I need to know if this possible and how to achieve it with expressions:

I’ve build a foldable element. Here is an example:

This is 3 layers with X axis rotation. Two of them, animated with 2 keyframes and last one with 3 keyframes.

Question: Is there any way to animate it without keyframes? Just with slider from 0 to 100%

You’ll have to wait a bit for a full answer on this. I’m very busy… or maybe someone else will have an answer.

But here’s a clue. You just need to parent one to another and expression link the rotation of each to the slider. If you want to use a time offset, use valueAtTime on the slider value. If you want the time to unfold to vary, you could use a linear() or ease() function.

And finally, you could set the starting angle of each fold by multiplying the layer’s own Expression angle control by its “foldedness” amount.

But yes… very doable.
