We’ve been told flash wasn’t any good on iDevices because it eats cpu for breakfast + now we have canvas which is cool and stuff ….

well, i have some news for you: current canvas implementation on iDevices sucks.
i mean, it really sucks hard….
i swear … it’s crap

an iPad 2 struggles with 100% cpu as long as you try some very basic draw image/canvas stuff

On the opposite side, Firefox and ie9 (which both offer hardware accelerated canvas) have utterly fast implementations.

i tweaked a test i found on jsperf to gain some additional data:

just click “Run tests”

test results will be public so everyone* would benefit from them…..

[*] to be completely honest, i could just been saying “everyone” to trick you in running the test …

I’m not sure.. but i don’t think the rendering engine on iOS is not designed to handle motion graphics inside the browser. Every time something changes in the page it needs to render the entire visible area and cache it as an image.

No wonder, they down-powered Safari to disallow web games and squeeze every last dollar from the App Store. It has nothing to do with Flash but just with an harsh way to do business.

that’s not true because css 3d transforms are uber fast thx to hw acceleration
unfortunately, canvas is a whole different story.

I always feel Apple tries to portray that nothing except their OS based animations / transitions are smooth (to make users to feel nothing is excellent than their visual capabilities or the reason mentioned by flashedge). Weird but I guess may be their marketing aspects ties their engineers hands. We can expect such ugly behaviors from almost all the BIG and commercially successful companies. (We will see a lot similar games played by google; nothing good for developers and users)

@tsafi
man, i know, i was messing with you myself :P

yeah, they have hw support in browser but it’s not used in canvas
which is nonsense unless done on purpose for the very same reason they banned flash.

what’s with the scary sound?

I’ve not tried that on a ipad but on windows with firefox. one of the cores skyrocketed at 100% .

Progress:

run something that is at the level of a 90’ gif = needs a 3+ Ghz 64 processor.
