It’s a fair question, quite a lot of independent theme marketplaces offer a free stripped down version of each theme.

Unfortunately Themeforest does not allow this, each theme is presented in full at full price, trial versions are not permitted.

Installation guidelines should be provided in documentation which is included with each WordPress theme sold here.

Who said this? You could always provide the same theme with less features for free on the WordPress repo for example.

I said could, because how could you strip a theme from it’s functionality in order to provide a free one? If we’re talking about a complex portfolio theme, if you strip the beautiful features you would remain with nothing. So the idea is a bit redundant.

The only thing which i see possible, would be something like Theme Fusion (i know) or Woo (i think)offer – beta test drive – a custom url and installation available for 24hrs where the user can test the theme before purchasing.

Someone started something like this, don’t know what became of it:

I don’t have a link to the thread, but I remember someone asking recently (last 6 months) if they could offer a stripped down version of their premium theme on here, for free on their own site, let’s say all theme options removed, reduced short codes etc. That kind of stuff.

There was a staff reply saying that this wasn’t allowed, but I’ve flagged this for staff reply so we might can clarification on that point.

As for it’s usefulness, that’s debatable, but it would certainly be quite a good marketing tool you’d have to agree?

You don’t have a trial version options, but I think you have many other ways to know what you gonna get. Some themes have the YouTube overview of the back-end. Some themes have amazing preview functions to show-off their best. And with all themes you can always have pre-sale questions that I believe most authors would answer :)

Really?! That sounds really strange, but if you saw it i believe you. I’m almost sure that i knew it was possible..

Anyway, i don’t know about this.. Useful or not it would be a great advertising tool, but it would need to be executed really well, so that people would need the “full” version :)

Hi guys,

I apologise for the delay on this, the official response is that using a ‘lite’ version of your theme for advertising is fine as long as there is a significant difference in the features available in each version. I hope this helps :)
