TimThumb installation?

I have some questions regarding TimThumb installation. What I know is it’s a .php file that I can upload in any of my public_html folder and change some chmod permission to 777 so the script can adjust images there. All this is not hard for me I’ve done this before.

What puzzles me is where do I upload the .php file? and would this script work on all the websites I have on that host server? Do I need to call the .php file by browsing it online like going to my browser and typing http://www.domain.com/folder/TimThumb.php to auto install it? (just like wordpress and other easy to install programs?)

I need TimThumb because it is required in some themes available on themeforest.

Thank you!

Actually you don’t need to install TimThumb in order for it to work, just place TimThumb on your server and you’re done. The second thing is that themes that use TimThumb have it already included in download file in appropriate folder, so that you don’t even need to mess with it. :)

I guess I scared myself when I found the “requirements” on some of the themes. Thanks a lot Pogoking!

I’ll go buy some themes now :D

Why don’t more themes use Wordpress’s built-in image resizing capability? TimThumb seems redundant, and a possible security risk with its recommendation to chmod the image folder to 777.

You can resize images using the following functions built into Wordpress:

wp_get_attachment_image(7, 'medium'); //display a medium sized image attachment
get_attachment_icon(7); //display a thumbnail for the given post
get_attachment_icon($attachment_id); //same thing inside The Loop

You can change the default size for the different image sizes and thumbnails in the admin

+1

I have used TimThumb on a few themes and like it very much. Being able to zoom-scale images help when uses don’t size things perfectly. But… it is no fun to support. Seems like I have to trouble shoot it quite a bit for buyers, and some hosting companies have to whitelist it on domains etc… Grabbing the attached image makes a lot of sense.

I have good knowledge of Photoshop and I can resize my images manually to fit the theme. Is that what TimThumb does?! if TimThumb script only resize the image and save it and that’s it then I’d rather do it manually for every post.

I always thought TimThumb gives you the thumbnail thing where when you click on the thumbnail you get a flash-like animation and the page is shaded then a pop-up image appear. Is that TimThumb or is it just the Theme’s feature?

Tim Thumb is a script that sizes images automatically for areas in themes. So if you upload a large image it scales it for certain sections in the theme based on how the theme developer implements it. I believe it was initially released in the Mimbo Pro WP theme.

I don’t believe this is what you think it is.

People who buy themes from this site are likely to use it for a client’s website, and the client probably won’t want to deal with resizing images in Photoshop. TimThumb makes it easy to create arbitrary-sized thumbnails, but given the problems getting it to work on some hosts, the built-in image functions in Wordpress are a better way to go in some cases.

Well, if it just simply resize images (which is something I can do manually) then I guess I will turn the feature off if it has 1% security issue.

Thanks a lot guys for your help :)

I am a little late to this party, but FYI here is an excellent plugin that i have had to go back and install on all my client sites that have TimThumb. http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/timthumb-vulnerability-scanner/
