TrendWatch 2014! What do you think is going to make it big in the new year, within the creative design space?

I asked around the office and got several responses. Do you agree and do you have other suggestions?

Stewart Boon, Product Manager: “I reckon floating navigation elements (eg refinement filter, social sharing, purchase boxes, save buttons etc) that are relevant no matter where you on a page will take off”

Alex Holmes, Customer Acquisition Manager: Explainer videos, bitcoin payment processing, flat design, mobile squeeze pages

and…bearded stock photos.

Dan Michael, Elites Manager: More user-centric design, less device-centric focus. I think voice control and wearable technology are going to be big for 2014.

Damir Kotoric, User Experience Designer :

  • increased use of CSS animations
  • designs that respond to the user’s physical environment http://www.jordanm.co.uk/post/65776639602/responding-to-environmental-lighting-with-css-media
  • increased popularity of one column design

    Saijo George, SEO:

  • infinite scroll
  • drag and drop page builders
  • one page websites

Michelle Robinson, Search Product Manager: “simple design, white space, sticky nav, long scrolling, more fonts and loads MORE video. PhoneGap and Elastic search!”

    Ben Smithett, Front End Developer:
  • Websites/apps designed and built with game consoles in mind. Xbox One & PS4 have serious browsers.
  • Adaptive content
  • The end of those “download our app!” popovers on mobile websites (I really really hope)

Me? Other than what everyone else said, I think 3D Printing, Interactive Parallax, Adaptive Logo design, visual blocking, video backgrounds, full-width backgrounds and fixed header bars will come into vogue. I also think that bokeh backgrounds will still be pretty popular!

Let us know what you think!

Whether you love it or hate it, Damir said it best,

“it’s not so much the particular techniques, but more so how people implement them. The problem with trends is that designers will just throw them into their websites just because everyone else is doing it…[a trend] can be a really nice touch to a site if implemented well.”

and from Catherine Hills, Senior User Experience Designer

    UI:

Content strategy: content served to the size of the plate Content that is consistent, and served in a way that is intelligent and consistent across devices – cloud based serving of data

Contextual, profiled information, in flow content and interactions Content and UI that is smart enough to reflect the users preferences, profiling becoming implicit, via actions rather than prompts

Interactions that are user centred and product driven Intelligent and implicit UX in interaction design, where user centred interaction is keyed. How do these interactions help the user through a process?

    UX:

Share economy and trading services The ‘share economy’ and trading is really zeitgeisty right now. Trading your services with other creative practitioners to get a project done for a client or complete a project of your own is ‘cool’. Collaboration is where it’s at, time exchanged as currency instead of a cash exchange. The day of trade is upon us, when currency is based on a code of trust.

Sequential interactions Multi-device design driven engagement with apps and website – cloud control on sequential interactions taking content driven design to a level where the shift from one device to another is tracked, and the user can continue an experience easily.

4D printing – What?? 3D printing that can think for itself apparently. Check out MIT for more information.

Responsive homepages with responsive fullscreen video sliders which work on any device (responsive show reels), I hope :)

Videos become more and more popular…designs should reflect that. Unfortunately it’s hard due to mobile&tablets diversity..but I really hope one day it will happen.
