Searched the forums because I figured there would be plenty of threads on this topic but I didn’t find what I was looking for. If it’s out there, I’m going to apologize in advance for starting a new thread.
I’m looking to develop my first theme for ThemeForest.
I want to create it as a child theme of the default twentyeleven, which is now responsive and, at least so far, looks like a great framework. The theme is included with recent versions of WordPress, so other than requiring a recent version, I don’t see any issues with going this route. That said, I would hate to go that route and discover later on that there is a problem. Some specifics I want to check into:
1. Is the approval process any more difficult for child themes?
2. Are there special requirements for child themes?
3. Do I get stuck in the framework section? That might turn off novices and some people may not even look there. Again, since the framework I want to use is included with WordPress, I would think the theme could live outside of that section, but if anyone can confirm one way or another I’d appreciate it.
4. Following on #3, do you have experience selling child themes here? What’s that experience been like? Did you get the impression that it hurt your sales? Did it require more support after the sale?
5. Is anyone using twentyeleven for their themes? Are you using it as a framework or are you copying it over and editing the theme files directly to create an independent theme?
5. Do I have to include the framework with the child theme submission even though, in this case, it’s distributed with WordPress?
If I have to bundle them together, that complicates things. Now I have to provide installation instructions that can’t be automated. My version of the framework will quickly be out-of-date, leading people to have to install it on top of their version and then upgrading. More complication.
