Updated Themes

I just updated my latest theme and it’s in the queue.

I just wondered what Envato does to let buyers of that theme know it’s been updated or does it give updated themes any kind of promotion?

Otherwise, it kind of defeats the objects of doing an update surely?

Well I don’t know about this, a long time ago I talked about the idea of an email subscription for buyers (like in the forums, “subscribe by email to updates from this thread” could be “subscribe by emailto updates from this item”, but it may not be so simple to implement

Yeah I like it – sort of like a trigger for when a theme is updated to send out an e-mail to everyone on the list who purchased it.

I imagine Envato sees this is as the authors responsibility which is fine, but I really think they should make a bigger deal of those themes that do update their themes.

But we can’t contact any of the buyers as we don’t have their email (which is a good thing to avoid “spam” lists) so if they don’t come back, they can’t know about updates

Precisely my point, it HAS to be an Envato thing e.g. they have the lists of members who have purchased items, its a service they really should look into because I think it would really increase business.

Then again, perhaps if it’s not increasing new sales but for existing customers maybe it’s not so important – I’d love it as a buyer though.

Totally agree with Jeff, I would love it as a buyer myself.. not having to constantly check TF every minute of the day.

Well I just updated my latest theme, I’ve put a wee banner on the thumbnail and edited the description but aside from that I’m not sure what else I could do.

I’m wondering whether it would be an easier option (than an e-mail system) to simply be able to filter by “updated” the same as you can with date, sales, price etc.

I think it would be quite nice to have an ‘update log’ for each item.

• Updated functionality
• Bug fix
• Minor update

Maybe a section of the site for items which have had the functionality updated. This would encourage authors to update items.

Maybe authors get an email when an item they have purchased has been updated with a bug fix.

I realise this might be open to abuse, but I think the reviewer who approves the update could confirm the items functionality has genuinely been updated.

There no Envato trick or tool that let’s buyers and non-buyers know that an theme/items has been updated, i hope that there will be something for this in the future.

The best thing you can do is to place an update overview on your item page, and use for example twitter to tweet about your update.

I believe it’s already on their to-do list, but it could be a long time till something like this is implemented.

You can create your own plugin or function which will pop up the alert message in wp-admin once their theme has been updated.
